Question about university and computers

Just a question about computers in uni. Just wanted to know, are u allowed to bring ur own rig with u to university, and if so, how many of your peers have high-end rigs?

And what are the computers at ur uni campus like, are they good and if so, post the specs.

This can be posted by anyone currently in college/university as i want to know from a variety of different people, and if so, please some UK responses as well as i am planning to continue studying in the UK even due to the chavs and crap weather.

Thanks for the responses: much appreciated!

Nice to see someone from the West Midlands.

It all comes down to your Uni's rules. Ask to make sure whether or not you can bring your own in. However, I'm confused as to why you'd go through the trouble of doing this. Unless you plan on doing some serious 3D work (or the equivalent) a laptop should suffice.

As for what the systems are like on campus, they do what they need to. Word processing, browsing and basic functionality should be not be a problem for any of them.

Also, lugging around that Enthoo filled with goodies might not be the best idea.

How about PC gaming in my spare time, dont want to waste money on a laptop? And how much free time do u get at uni anyways?

And its nice to see a fellow West Midlander around here: check out this funny uncyclopedia article of the town where i live: http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Walsall

First and foremost, I'd like to get something clear. Is this system going to be put in your dorm?

As for free time, it depends on the course that you take.

I brought my desktop to my dorm room. It might be wise to get a picture of your dorm room just to make sure there is room to put all of your stuff. As far as what HeathCliff said about possibly not having a lot of free time, trust me you will your first year. Going into college I thought I would have little free time but you'll be surprised.

Here's a picture I took of my setup.

Most people I know, myself included, have there PC at Uni with them. I don't think the Uni can stop you? I mean you are the one paying for your living etc.

As long as you are in a safe dorm you are fine.

Both last year and this year I have a locked door into the building and then again into the floor and finally again into my room.

You will probably have similar wherever you go, cept a house you probably wont have the floor locked. Then you will be most likely living with friends so its less an issue.

Is it a pain? Kinda.

I have to lug it there and back, but I only really moved it last year on like 3 occasions. Moved in, home for Christmas / bringing it back, then leaving. So not too bad.

And yeah, I'd say the same as the other posts. First year you will most likely have a bunch of free time, less work and the work doesn't mean anything towards your final grade.

Hell, alot of my first year was going over stuff I did at Sixth-form as first year is a time for them to get everyone to the same level. I knew a bunch of some parts, and none of some. Just levels you out, but does mean there are times when you have done it all before.

As for the PCs at Uni, not sure about the general ones, never used 'em.

The ones in my lab have Xeons and like 16GBs of RAM I think, with Linux installed on them.
