I have a sonos sound system, and the music that it accesses is spread out throughout ask our family's computers. I'm aware I could just use the cloud, but that's no fun. Can you guys design a cheap, 1-2 tb home server for me? I don't need anything super fancy, maximum four computers on it at a time, mostly for holding music, maybe running a Minecraft server.

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

A Pentium G3258 or i3 with a z87 or z97 motherboard, because it has more native Sata 3 ports. If you are willing to spend more, you could get a i5. A GPU is not needed. Case and powersupply, don't need to be that special. I would get something with a 80+ Gold or platinum rating, because a server will run 24/7. For Drives, one SSD for boot and a WD Red for Storage. You can get 2 Red and put them in Raid 1 with the intel chipset, so if one fails the data will be safe.

For OS you can use Windows 7/8 or use any Linux distro like Fedora or Ubuntu. For the Data stuff you can install OwnCloud, which is available for Windows and Linux.

Intel 4790k | Asus Z97 Maximus VII Impact | Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 16 GB 1866Mhz | Asus Strix GTX 980 | CoolerMaster G550 |Samsung Evo 250GB | Synology DS215j (NAS) | Logitech G502 |

What about Windows server? Also, is there a chance you could put that ask in a pcpartpicker list?

Also, Pentium? Aren't those kinda low end? I can probably spend 700 total on this build... There is probably room for an xeon in there...?
