Industrial Case Mod

Insomaniac

Hey guys, I am here with a new build that I am creating as a Christmas present for my brother. My dad is going to furnish the parts for the machine which will likely be as follows.

Probable Specs:

Intel i3-4150 dual core 3.5Ghz

Asrock H97M uATX board

8 GB DDR3 G.Skill 1600 MHz RAM

My Old Gigabyte GTX 460

His Old HD(forget the size, non-SSD)

600W RAIDMAX PSU

Anyhow I will be doing this build basically all day and thing that I should be able to finish the plans I have for it today. It will not be nearly as crazy as my Tree Stump case here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/269471-tree-stump-build-log/

I am doing a paint job before cutting as a slightly different approach and also because it is too early to get to cutting metal in the garage just yet. So I will plan out my lines and hopefully machining will go quickly when I get out there at a more decent hour. :)

I just began by disassembling it fully, though I have put some pieces in the pics back on to get a better conceptual idea of what I will do. I have started by painting over the stupid little fan stickers because they are older fans and the sticky goo is not what I feel like removing.

Here's an update so far on my build, I have to get a few extra construction materials before my 'vision' is complete. This is pretty much the base layer of paint. Ill add details in after the full construction is complete.

Another update on the case... I guess technically this is a triple post, hopefully it can be forgiven for the nature of this build. All the cutting and base paint is done. I will probably add in a few more details in paint like a 'Caution' or something like that. Any suggestions are welcome. This is pretty much how it will look, I am going to be adding in blue LED strips as soon as the clear coat is done drying.

Interesting. Good idea. Maybe add more copper / rust pieces.

My camera is not very good on my phone, but there is quite a bit of light rust over the whole body. I do like the copper mix in I just didn't want to go too overboard with it. I will find a way to incorporate more in somehow. I would say that this is basically finished. The lights and paint are done. Anything from here on out will just be because I have time to stare at it and add in new things. I think that this is alright for a one day build, a little over 14 hours from when I started early this morning. Although with my breaks in between I probably only worked on this for about a 6 - 8 hours.

EDIT: So after finding some extra casting materials and a good night of sleep I have a brilliant idea for this case. In the front I removed some foam from behind the grates and it allows more visibility, what I will do is cast a brain and suspend it from wires and such to make it look crazy! The brain will also light up of course :)

So my one day build has grown to a long than one day build, but really it's just some extra additions while I have time... Here are pictures of the brain I made and getting ready to mold it. I didn't get a good pic of the brain stem and cerebellum but my mold is almost finished so I can pull it back out and compare with when I am done casting it.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hey guys, I got around to finishing the "Brain" of the case. I think it turned out quite well, I added two different colored LED strips into each side when I poured them. I am pretty pleased with the paint job on the brain itself, in person it looks like it could be pretty "fresh" still :) It is totally suspended by the wires that are poking into the slides and friction fits on top of the optical media channels. I created a small access window in the front to give a better view and fit with the theme.

Thanks :)

The case originally had a fan in that spot which left a hole in the metal grating that I didn't really have a good way to fill in. I either had to do something with just he circular hole or the entire grate itself and I really had no material for it. I'd rather it not be there but it doesn't bother me too much :)
