Hello,

This will be my first build and it is a relatively budget build.  I'm focusing on the Motherboard and CPU while the other components can be budget and easily replaced should I want to upgrade.  Let me know if you found something that I pulled a stupid on, and any other thoughts.  Thank you for your time!

1. Budget & Location

My budget for this build is roughly $1,500 U.S. dollars.

2. Aim

The aim for this build is to primarily be a gaming machine (any and all types of games) that I can upgrade gradually.  I'm putting more money and effort into the Motherboard and CPU than anything else.  Pretty much everything else is temporary (especially the graphics card).

3. Monitors

For now, I'll be using a 24 inch TV that I've had for years with plans to get up to four monitors (when I have two graphics cards).

4. Peripherals

I have all of the Peripherals that I need.  I also will be getting these Operating Systems, all of which are optional: Windows 8, Windows 7, Linux Mint, and Kali Linux.

5. Why are you upgrading?

I've been on the same laptop for over 5 years now, and it's just time for an upgrade because it just can't handle what I need it to these days.

why get a 4770k if you are getting a 650ti? a boost is a better value or 660

Maybe because he's not much of a gamer but instead likes to create HD content for places like YouTube?

the aim of the build is gaming machine

no he said it's intended specifically for gaming, and that the 650 ti is temporary.

so seems like he should dump the 4770K,drop down to 8GB ram, definitely buy anything other than a toshiba HDD, and spend more on the gpu.

a 4770k is going to last him alot longer than the i5

Ah.

What makes you say that?

hyperthreading is going to come in handy in the near future.

a 4770k is going to last him alot longer than the i5

if you mean that games are beginning to use all 8 threads, that's not a very valid reason.

that's the same logic as when people bought core 2 quads years before games could utilize them, and then when the majority of games could utilize quad cores, much better quad cores,i5's & i7's, were released.

unless you're buying for something that can be utilized in a majority of applications you use at the time of purchase, you're wasting money.

In general, this machine is meant primarily for gaming.  But I'll be doing anything from gaming, to programming, to video editing.  Just about anything a person uses a computer for I'll more than likely touch base on.

Also, any suggestions on a decent HDD other than Toshiba?  Thanks again for looking out and spotting my stupid showing.

Samsung and WD are all I'd buy.

The GPU is a temporary piece.  It will be the first thing I replace down the line.  Even then, it's still better than what I'm currently using.

The problem with replacing a GPU early is that you could have used the money you put into the weaker one into a better one and get a better overall value for you build.

True.  This build won't be for another month so with the new cards that just hit the market, I'm hoping for some price drops on some better cards.
