Creating a new build (Completely new to this :D)

Go to solution Solved by OhhTee,

Okay so if we go for the build that RJSX1 suggested with the MX100 that Oh Tee suggests that should be a good okay build right? :D

If so then I think I am dealt with and I'll mark this as solved when we have the build finalized :D

Here ya go! It basically destroyed your monitor/peripherals budget. Haha.

Hey guys, so I'm creating a new build as my current laptop (Yes, I know ugh) is basically a baked potato now lol.

1. Budget & Location
So I'm based in the United Kingdom so I will be using £s. The budget is anything between £850 to £1000, £1000 being the complete top end of the build.

2. Aim
The aim is hopefully going to be a variation of gaming with top games like arma 3, Assassin's Creed Unity, Simulator games like DCS world and even Star Citizen if I feel crazy enough. But also 3d model building and animation along with the use of Cubase 6 and direct input microphones and guitar. Add to this basic student work for uni and the like.

3. Monitors
Gosh I haven't a clue on what I would want here, something that would compliment the computer itself well I guess.
4. Peripherals
Right now what would be useful is a good quality mouse and keyboard with some durability. Maybe even if there is spare space a joystick for my simulator games.

5. Why are you upgrading?
Pretty much my laptop has been reduced to a baked potato, unable to play even some of the more simple games at times without overheating, either way this upgrade has been waiting a very long time.

Alright thanks, if I need to answer anything else please do say

Tactical Bacon :D

btw your laptop overheating issue might be as simple as a bad fan my girlfriends HP laptop started doing the same thing turned out her main intake fan went bad

Yes I've thought about this, rather irritating thought to be frank, I'll survive until a new computer though hopefully :P

Thanks though :D

So the break down to see what we can work with.

Reasonable Monitor - £100

Windows 8.1 - £75

Mouse / Keyboard if OP is feeling it - £100

£1000 - £275 = £725

So we have £725 to work with.

How heavy would you rate your 3d modelling and content creation? Light, medium, heavy?

Also, are you interested in overclocking or not?

Are you going to want to SLI in the future? I'm asking so so that if you're not, I can choose a less expensive motherboard.

Firstly, I'm able to get hold of windows 7 enterprise and windows office enterprise free so we don't need to talk about that.
3d modelling is a bit of a minor here, I'm definitely going to be doing more gaming and music based stuff. So we'll say light
I'd rather not experiment with overclocking but maybe you can persuade be :P

I'm going to have to go derp mode here and say, "SLI-possibilities??"

Simply put, SLI means you can run two or more nvidia graphic cards together for a boosted performance. CrossFire means running two or more AMD graphic cards together.

Also, make sure to quote us or use the @username tag so it will let us know that you responded to our comments.

No prob if you ever decide you want to fix it the fans arent that expensive just go on ebay you can find oem fans on their cheap. As for taking it apart to get to that fan it usually isnt that hard just a hand full of screws on the back somewhere between 5-10 screws usually. The replacement fan for my girlfriends HP was only like $8.

Right well, whatever would make it easier for me to run my current stuff really, I could send you my steam profile with the games I own to show you, http://steamcommunity.com/id/TacBac33/

I would like it to run 3ds as well but yeah, whatever works.

How picky are you with the mouse/keyboard, do you know how much you want to spend on it? Just so I can maximize the parts for your computer haha.

Hahah well, my current mouse which is also dying is a R.A.T 5, but to be fair as long as it is quick and responsive I can probably get more expensive stuff later on haha

For starters, this would be a great gaming computer with light editing. I'm trying to bring down another build within your budget though that would help with editing/content creation better. But if your 3d modelling and stuff is as light as you say, this should do fine. I don't have any trouble when I do 3d modelling on my i5. Let me see if I can bring down the other build I was working on.

This would also leave you roughly £140 for keyboard/mouse/monitor of your choosing.

With this setup: you can overclock moderately if you choose to do so, add two more 4 gb ram stick if you think 8 gb isn't enough in the future, add another gpu if you want more power, and you also have a big enough SSD to load windows 7 and some core applications you use frequently on and/or games you like.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£167.50 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (£95.54 @ More Computers)
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£76.25 @ Amazon UK)

I reckon that the content creation that I'm going to be doing is musical mainly, literally the 3d editing is something I just want to try out, I've never really given it a go lol
This build looks like the kind of thing I'm looking for though, thanks :D

I +1 this build, it will really work well for what Bacon is going to do.

I also have this build which I think will suit your content creation and playing star citizen better. I increased the ram up to 16 GB, replaced the i5 4690k with a xeon with hyper threading, remove the SSD to get within budget. The downside is; you get a lower budget for your monitor/peripherals, no overclocking, and no SSD.

Let me know what you think.

I feel like I can bear slightly increased loading times in favour of a better overall experience to be fair, it's not like I've experienced it so I won't miss it :D

This would actually be better, can you overclock the CPU?

Haha. They're both good builds, in my opinion. The xeon is basically an i7 that can't overclock without an integrated GPU. You won't get much of a performance increase compared between the i5 and i7 if it's gaming. The xeon will help with your content creation and I believe Star Citizen is going to be using hyper threading so it's definitely a plus. AND MORE RAM!

You cannot overclock the CPU, at least for the 1231, it's locked.

what kind of effect would not having the SSD have on it? Would it be worth going with the SSD but going over budget?

The SSD is a luxury item that I think everyone should have. Once you go SSD, you'll never go back haha. It increases loading time by a SIGNIFICANT amount in everything. It has faster write/read time than a normal HHD.

If you really can't afford to go over the budget that much, I would definitely replace the HDD with a the Crucial MX100 256 GB  and just use it for now until you can afford to put a HDD in your system too.
