The Raggedy Edge

So, I've recently been really bored, and got into a weird habit of watching hour after hour of Firefly/Serenity cast "reunion" panels. A lot of times the conversation would drift into "what if" moments about the show and if it had been allowed to continue.

 

While it's pretty much fact that the Firefly/Serenity series as we know it is dead and over, especially considering the untimely departures of certain crew members, it got me thinking. What about a spinoff series? Something that shows a new side of that universe? Whole new cast, whole new set of problems, but still able to build and expand on the stories and plot lines already started by the original series. This would give some closure to the multitude of perma-cliff hangers, and give the fans a slice of something to rally around.

 

Let me be clear that the ideas that follow now came to me just a short while ago while I was in the shower. They're incomplete, sketchy at best, and probably terrible. Also probably already done by another TV show, but since I've never so much as seen a single episode of Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, I wouldn't know. I just felt the need to write them down and get some other opinions.

 

What I was thinking is something looking from the top-down. Centered around a particular crime-boss, and the things he (or she) must do to control their tangled web within the universe. Finding crews to do their dirty work, competing for power against other gangs and finding ways to stay one step ahead of the law. They're not unlike Captain Reynolds and co., simply trying to make a living in the void, they just happen to have a much bigger slice of it, and a lot more to worry about.

 

To make things interesting, this boss could be a has-been. Betrayed, stripped of power and pretty much left to waste away, and now he's trying to climb back to the top again. He's not content with just drifting and scraping out a living, he wants everything back, and must decide who to make enemies or who to align himself with in order to get it. 

 

Now, to be clear, it wouldn't be Firefly. Again, whole new cast, all new story. Plot parallels and crossovers? Sure. Occasional Nathan Fillion cameo? Wouldn't be complete without him. The universe hasn't changed, simply the people it's focused on. But it's still all it's own organism. There are billions of people in Firefly, I'm sure one of them has something going on that could match the magic of the original series.

 

So what do you think? I apologize if this rambled, I'm already several hours past when I should be sleeping, but the thoughts were keeping me awake. Maybe I'll come back tomorrow, realize I'm an idiot, and edit everything away to be forgotten. But if I'm on to something... share your thoughts. This won't be submitted anywhere or petitioned to Joss or anything silly like that, I just wanted to write it all down and hopefully stir some conversation.
