Do you need a back plate? I have 2 gtx 680s but only 1 came with a back plate

You don't need one but it can help with looks a lot, also can help cool ever so slightly. Also stops and leaks getting onto the GPU directly.

I would argue; it makes it harder to dry the card if you do have a leak and it makes it harder to spot a leak.

If it was a full blown leak it would be, but for a tiny drop say it'd stop the liquid hitting the back of the card (I'm thinking leak from a CPU block)

Any leak is a problem. :/ Eventually that pool of water could spill over. It would just delay it inevitable once the leak started

Gives you a better chance of catching it though :) My PC is in full sight when I walk past luckily.
