I have an AMD FX 4100 and a Radeon 7850 as of now and I'm looking to upgrade sometime next year. I was going to upgrade to a FX 8350 and a R9 290. However, when I read some articles I found out that AMD is not expanding on the FX series and is ditching the AM3+ socket soon. So I decided that an Intel Haswell CPU would be best for "futureproofing" my system since haswell, haswell refresh, and broadwell all use the 1150 socket. I am looking at getting an i5-4590 CPU and I;m trying to decide on what GPU. I am looking at either a R9 285, R9 290, or GTX 970. I am looking for opinion as to which is better for gaming and for the price. Any opinion are appreciated and please no Fanboy comments. Also looking for a good 1150 Motherboard to get that has 4 RAM slots and a USB 3 header for front USB. Thanks!

He said the f-word!

On a serious note though, GTX 970 is an absolute beast card and pretty much destroys the R9 line-up; I would get one personally if I could afford it  :(

Plus for mobo, if you don't mind spending a few dollars, go with the MSI z97 Gaming 5 (or the G55 will do as well). Has all what you need and overclocks super easy!

Right now the R9 290x is a complete steal so that is a good option.

For the CPU, I also came from an FX but upgraded to the Z97 with a 4690K which I recommend because it is really good and enables OC(free performance).

If you plan to upgrade with broadwell, you must get a Z97 board because that is the newest chipset the probably(I hope) will support and then, if you upgrade, you can get a cheaper CPU now.

Get the r290 for around 220$

Keep your cpu and decide for yourself after testing and playing games, if you need to spend another 300-500 for mainboard cpu and ram.

You can sell your old pc parts everytime, if thats the thing you´re worried about and the new parts can only get cheaper.

I'd love to have a GTX 970 but they are a little more expansive than I'd like to pay. The lower 970s are like $330 and the average 290 is about $250. Is there much of a differenece in performance between the 2. And I'm planning on getting a Z97 Mobo. What is the average price for a 290X?

At stock the 290 is pretty much the same. If it's cheaper the 290 is a better option, but the 970 is a better card (lower power consumption, more OC potential).

For that price is dumb skipping the 290.

the 290x is more expensive, if you want to go for that, I would recommend you the 970 all the time.

Performance... maybe 8fps less? depends on the game.

But if you are the one who pays for the power bill, you may want to get the 970, less power usage, lower noise because of lower heat, nvidia shadowplay. And the difference of 80$ between the r290 can be saved up in the end of the year.

In the second year you can ad this to the buying price, the 970 appears to be "cheaper"
