going to be getting one of these, ignoring the price, what is the difference between these? looks like identical specs

 

For most purposes they are the same. They use the same controller and the same capacity dies in each. The biggest difference being is that the MX100 is produced using a smaller process, 16nm compared to the M550's 20nm process. This means that the MX100 will be slightly more power efficient, along with cheaper for Crucial to make. However, different tests have shown that smaller process manufacturing causes the life of an SSD to decrease. So the MX100 will likely have a shorter lifespan than the M550.

The mx100 uses a smaller manufacturing process (16nm) and is meant to be more power efficient.  The m550 seems to offer better performance based on some quick research.  The m550 is also available in higher capacities.

Here is the source that I found.  http://www.custompcguide.net/the-differences-between-crucial-mx100-vs-m500-and-m550-ssd/  I believe that by using 16nm flash, the power requirements are lower.  However it is probably not by much and ssds use such a small amount of power in the first place that it really doesn't make a difference.  I would choose the one that gives better performance and is available in the capacity you want.
