Brother is wanting a laptop for Christmas.. £300 limit

Hi guys, my brother would like to get a laptop this Christmas and the cash that is available for it is a maximum of £300... 

 

This obviously doesn't leave a massive amount of room for different things. We were thinking of getting him a chromebook but after remembering that it won't run normal .exe files means that is a no. He is 16 so he will be doing a fair amount of work on it, web browsing and maybe some light gaming such as Minecraft and football manager. 

 

Does anyone have any recommendations on which laptop would suit?

I was thinking that if he gets a laptop I might buy him an SSD to upgrade the standard HDD in it so it runs even quicker.

I'm not sure he would be able to get a new 'gaming' laptop for £300. I would try and find a decent second-hand one on eBay :)
