GTX 970 upgrade problems

I just recently bought a evga gtx970 SC and a 850w PSU from Fry's.

I returnd home to install it into my computer but it would start up and only go to the splash screen and WOULDNT launch windows 7.

My previous specs are:

8gb of ram

Intel core i5 2300 2.8ghz

HP case

Cooler master 500w PSU

Cleveland gl8 mobo

Please help!

No my 500w only has 1 6pin connector and it requires 2 6pin

 

There's your reason, the GPU is not getting enough power. You will either need a new PSU, or more 6 pin connectors if your GPU or PSU did not come with converters.

I did but my 500w PSU was old and didn't have connector for adapter

The one I bought is a thermaltake modular 850w 80gold

Are you sure you have connected your video cable to the GPU itself and NOT the motherboard?

Yes I'm sure, maybe its the motherboard?

 

Is you GPU in the right PCIE lane? Is it x16 lane?

I have a zotac gtx 550ti on it right now and that requires PCI 2.0

 

What about the lane? The lane is important... It has to bex16

Or, wait you're fine... if that worked so must the 970. Hm... It could be a faulty GPU.

Ya I called EVGA and they wanted me to launch in legacy mode by tweaking the BIOS but I'm not comfortable working in the BIOS, plus I couldn't find many BIOS instructions for my mobo on HP support site

 

Gotta say man, you gotta do BIOS. Or they won't RMA it for you. If you make a mistake all you have to do is remove the CMOS battery...

Can anyone help guide me through the bios of my motherboard?

 

Keep pressing DEL F1 or any of those keys until BIOS appears and then you'll have to navigate it yourself...
