I’ve tried holding out and using my pc, but I’m an electrical engineering student and there are just too many times when I need a laptop on campus. Much of what I’m going to use it for is school work(programming, modeling/CAD, excel, word, etc.), but I will also use it to watch movies and do some gaming(everything from Minecraft to COD) when I go back home over the holiday.

My budget is $1000-$1500.

Screen size >= 13in and these days it should probably be a touch screen, although that isnt a deal breaker.

Resolution >= 1080p

Storage- must be an SSD >= 240 GB. I have external storage so I don’t need much more.

Processor- 4th gen quad core i7

Video card >=860m

Battery life should be ok, but most of the time I’ll have a place to plug in for power.

My main goal is speed, I don’t want to wait a long time for programs to respond and/or open. I also want something that looks nice and sleek, the thinner the better. For example, I don’t think the ASUS G750JW looks good. It’s bulky and the way the screen opens looks bad to me. Something more along the lines of the Lenovo Y-50 is what I think looks good.

These are the main things I thought of, but if you disagree with my criteria or can think of other criteria, please let me know. I’ve never owned a laptop so I don’t really know what to look for.

Have you used any of these personally?

The Y50 is def a valid choice. Asus G550JK is also pretty hot, but it has 850M (dealbreaker? xD)

There arent too many places selling the asus one. Looks like its maybe being replaced.
