gpu temp to high?

Go to solution Solved by ANDuff,

Sounds like something is wrong there, I would definitely take it back and get it replaced or change it for the Asus.

some of you might allready know i'm struggling with my 980 gaming from msi,

i'm now running down the last steps in figuring out if the gpu is bad.
when i first put it in, my pc just crashed, witch forced me to do a format.
it got a bit better, but troubles didn't stay away with bad picture from the display ports.
Now, i'm running with dvi & hdmi so far so good, however, the idle temp of my gpu runs up to 56°C
i have to downclock it as far as it goes and it barely makes low 40's. does it performs normal now or do i still have problems?
note, the fans do cool it down to low 40's but after a while the fans shut off (like they should) but then the temp rises to mid 50's once again.
(yes both fans work, i nearly cut my finger while feeling blindly -_- )

I can swap the gpu in the store without having to wait for the answers from msi for an asus strix one.
any suggestion or ideas to solve it once and for al? :)

I have the MSI 980 & this is what you should have on idle

msi afterburner is showing me (with this browser opening, installing maffia 2 and that's it:

core clock 608 MHz

memory clock 3005 MHz

so there is something really wrong then because my gpu usage is 0%

and to others, thnx, seems like i really do have a bad gpu, i'm going to switch to asus strix then, because i do have  a asus mb and i only have to pay the difference between the msi and asus one (what i think is a fair deal)
