Creating Dropbox-esque storage with CPanel

My apologies if this isn't the correct subforum to post this in.

I have an "unlimited" storage and bandwidth hosting plan which uses CPanel, and for the past year I've been using it for storage. My issue is that using cpanel to manually upload files seems like a very roundabout way of doing so. I'm wondering if there was any kind of Dropbox-y type of solution I can use, that'll make my hosting easier to upload to, easier to get links from, and generally more "secure" (like private folders that cannot be linked to, and public folders that can).

Does any solution exist for shared hosting, or am I out of luck? Thanks in advance for any replies.

There are none that I know that work out of the box on shared hosting, I know OwnCloud is similar to DropBox, but you need root access for that.

My web host has Softaculous installed on CPanel, so I installed OwnCloud on that. Bit disappointed with it though; couldn't get it to accept uploads greater than 8MB, and I couldn't find a way of direct linking what I uploaded from it. I don't think my hosting has SSH either.

Thanks for the recommendations though.

KingEurope, there is no way that you are going to be able to get around that 8MB upload. Most likely this is a setting that your host has set, and does not allow you to change it. I would look into seeing if you do have SSH access or not. If you do you can use the SFTP protocol which uses encryption in it's file transferring. After the files are uploaded you can make a website that lists all of the files and displays them for you to download.

The best solution is to use FTP. Though those unlimited hosting plans sometimes come with a catch, they are not meant to be used as file storage, only for what the website needs.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)
