Home ethernet connection

Go to solution Solved by JohnnyGrey,

You can't connect a computer to a phone plug. Just won't work. You either have to swap out connectors or go without Ethernet.

I have my house wired for rj45 connections, and they come out as rj11? (I think thats the term) how do I connect my router to the houses Ethernet connections, I know ill have to switch the rj11 to 45's but I dont know how the house connects to the router...

sorry if vauge i hardly know what im talking about, but i want my pc connected via Ethernet from 2 stories up

Current Build: Desk

My case is my most expensive part

Its Almost 2015 and I don't have an SSD

So, the phone line that comes into your house is RJ-11 and your PC is RJ-45? You will need a modem.

Or are you saying that the wall plates are RJ-11? Because those aren't ethernet.

The plates coming out of the wall are rj-11 but i need them to be rj-45, then i need to cocennect the house wiring to the router, which is rj-45 but i don't know where the heck to connect it at

If you only have RJ-11 you're not going to be getting it to RJ-45 without ripping some walls open and gutting thr cables.

There is a big difference between RJ-11 and RJ-45... namely there are fewer wires and you're not going to get decent speed on it, either.

You won't be able to convert your RJ-11 phone lines to ethernet, so your only option is to route new ethernet through your house. This can be a difficult task, so you might have to cut walls open, drill holes, and might require going into your crawl space/attic.

I think the wiring is rj-45 but is a female rj-11 jack? I know that the house is wired for eithernet but the only line that fits in the wall is a phone line

If you're wiring your house using ethernet cable, just replace the wall jack to RJ-45, but it's confusing how do you connect 8 cable ethernet to 4 pin RJ-11 in your house installation? If you only use 4 cable (pair green & orange) and connect it with RJ-11 female wall jack, just convert that pair to standard RJ-45. With 4 cable you can still have 100Mbps ethernet bandwidth.

You need to take off one of the wallplates, and see how many wires there are. If it's infact Cat5 cabling, you'll probably see four wires going to the RJ11 jack, and four taped off, or two going to the jack, and 6 taped off.

Is it possivble to get pictures of the router, input socket and output socket (At the router and the room you want it in?)

This might clear things up.

If you pull off your wall plate you could check to see if Cat5/5e/6 cable was used as phone line, but I highly doubt it. If it is ethernet, then you will need to go to your phone line termination box and remove the cables you want to use, then re route those either to or near your router. Then you will just replace the keysones with RJ-45 ones(You will want to buy a keystone punch tool).

If you're wiring your house using ethernet cable, just replace the wall jack to RJ-45, but it's confusing how do you connect 8 cable ethernet to 4 pin RJ-11 in your house installation? Easy, you only use 4(or 2?) of the 8 wires. I've seen people use ethernet as phone line and they just cut the wires they don't need.

^ Truth. The townhome I'm renting a basement in from some friends has the place wired with Cat5e cabling, but where they converge is a shitty job. (Right above my desk, in fact, by the electrical box.)

Some non experienced technicians didn't know the standard of ethernet cabling. There is time when I'm fixing ethernet link in a dormitory and it turns to be a frustrating work because all the cables on the switch are not labeled and the ethernet cabling order was not right at all.

okay, ill check in a sec here, how would i connect the router to the houses Ethernet then?

EDIT: It is rj-45 wiring, so ill change the connector to a rj45 then now i just need to connect it to the router...anyone?

You have to find where all the wiring comes together. I'm guessing somewhere in the basement. You can't just have a bunch of Cat5 cabling going to a bunch of wallplates all taped together. You'd have to cut off all the ends where the wiring comes together, put RJ45 connectors on, and then have the router there.

I think the router is connected to house cat5 cables

Assuming the RJ-11 connected to pair green & orange, just make a ethernet cable using RJ-11 on one side and RJ-45 on the other side with pair green & orange connected to pin 1,2,3 & 6. Check on google for ethernet wiring diagram.

Most people here are wrong!>.< using your phone lines for internet connectivity is easy!

Step 1: establish the kind or cable yo have running in your walls. Most houses come with either CAT3, CAT5, and CAT5e.

You might see CAT6, but that is only in large new houses. The main diffrence between the cables is the amount of twists the

pairs have.CAT5, Cat5e, and CAT6 cables will all work. unfortunately, CAT3 wont do you any good.

Step 2: Terminate wall jack. you might have to go out and buy a new wall plate and a connector block. this vidoe can show you how to do it!

Step 3: You will need yo figure out exactly where the other end of the cable is going to/from. Normally, network cables are routed to one of 3

ways. Most commonly, they go to a central hub located outside the house. if so, you will need to take the cable from outside your

house and you will have to re-route the cable to the room with your router. Cables can also be ran to a central box inside your house

usually inside the closet known as smart pannels. Most smart panels come router ready, they may contain a power outlet and

ventilation holes for you to put a router in there(this is the best way to have your house wired). Or you may have a daisy chain. This

is when you take just one cable ran throughout your whole house and just spliced where your phones go. You will not be able to do

              much with this setup.

Step 4: Connect! you will need to connect a router to one end of the cable, get the other end of the cable and you can now connect a

computer or another network device to your wall.

NOTES* basically, your goal is to have one good connection from point A to point B. I recommend you test the connection at every point. test your connection from your modem, then from modem to router , from router to wall, from wall to other wall, from other wall to computer. (if that makes any scene at all >.<) These are just basics and every house is different. So this may be of no good use for you. But if you have any questions feel free to ask me, I do this for a living so i may be able to help!

...

I agree with everything said! Let's hope the residence is new enough to actually have modern wiring in the walls. My mom's house is from either the 70's or 80's, and is a cheap pre-fabricated house, so all it contains is old solid copper single pair phone cable. Now that's a pain!

I was merely stating before that an RJ11 plug itself can't be used for computer connectivity, since the OP's dad won't let him change to RJ45 Jacks/plugs. The wiring behind the plate may very well be perfect for home ethernet wiring. It'd just a matter of find how and where all the connections converge inside the house.
