updated- bios doesn't recognize hdd

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

I'll try that and let you know how it went, thanks!

Unfortuntely the only extra desktop I have is an old P4 so it might take some time to do the testing...

Does the rma procedure involve me sending back the drive, or can I just keep it / will someone come and get it?

You can find everything related to RMA procedure including how and where the drive should be sent at our website http://www.wdc.com/en/ under Support.

Hi guys,

I was trying to make a partition on a brand new WD black 1tb hdd, the hdd is regognized and the partitioning tool started creating the partition, however it's been at it for about 10 minutes and all the while it's not responding, nor showing any signs of life. I don't know if I should kill the process, could this damage the drive? Should I just wait it out? Why does it even take so damn long?

Thanks :)

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

Update: it now responds again but the drive is labeled as "formatting pending" and it doesn't seem like it's doing much. I also don't have any actions available other than "cancel fromatting".

Hey there Sauron (almighty Necromancer, Enemy of the Middle Earth, Lieutenant of Melkor),

Is sounds like unusual problem. I would download WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and run both the quick and the extended tests to see if the drive is not faulty. Here's a link to it: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810〈=en
Post back the results. I might be able to help you out.
Good luck on your journey, oh Lord of Barad-Dur,

Thanks for the answer!

Unfortunately the issues just got worse after I posted this thread :( I finally managed to format the drive using a live xubuntu dvd (windows partition manager had crashed) and made an ntfs partition and an ext4 one.

I tried installing windows 10 to the ntfs partition (which was my goal since the beginning) however it gave me a weird error and said it wasn't able to format the unit. Xubuntu confirmed that the ntfs partition might have been damaged, however weirdly enough the ext4 one was perfect.

I then tried to reboot to windows 7 to run chkdsk, but to my dismay the bios stopped recognizing the hdd at all. The drive spins up, but neither windows nor the bios "see" it. I even tried different sata posts and cables, various resets, still nothing. Any suggestions on what I could do before giving up and going for an rma?

Hello there oh creator of the One Ring!

The battle for this drive may have gone bad, but it is not over yet. I suggest try it on a different computer or with a SATA to USB cable externally (or with an external enclosure) and see how the system recognizes it. If it does, try running a chkdsk /r from the cmd or the DOS-based WD DLGD.
In case the drive is not recognized on BIOS, Device Manager or Disk Management, I believe you should contact our support and go for an RMA. Even though your humble servant may have fallen in the battle with bits and data, a new one shall rise from the great wizards, masters of the RMA spell, bound to you in eternal service.
