Hey guys! I am looking to build a BEAST of a server. The main purpose will be to host a HEAVILY modded Minecraft world (larger than most survival worlds usually are), amoung other things. Since the Minecraft server is not very multi-threaded, more CPUs and more cores won't help much. I still want a high core count though, but only one cpu, because I do intend to be able to host other crap on it as well. Not all at once though.

My concerns are:

  • Lots of RAM
  • High clock speed
  • 4 cores (at least)

I want to limit the budget to 1000 dollars MAX, 750-850 ideally. As far as cases, sound, and any other visual crap: I don't care. At all. Whatever gives the best performance.

What do you guys think?

As long as you wont have much more that 15-20 players online at the same time 12-14 gb ram allocated to the server is enough.

But this is what I would build for that kind of money, You may want something different.

At the moment im hosting a server with a i3 4010U with 2,5 gb allocated RAM and it runs fine with up to 2-4 players at different locations

And up to 8 players if they are close to eachother (within 100 blocks)

My Gaming PC

|| CPU: Intel i5 4690@4.3Ghz || GPU: Dual ASUS gtx 1080 Strix. || RAM: 16gb (4x4gb) Kingston HyperX Genesis 1600Mhz. || Motherboard: MSI Z97S Krait edition. || OS: Win10 Pro

i didn't think minecraft servers took adv of multi core?

If I remember correctly, minecraft servers can use multiple cores, but the actual game only runs on one core.

XEON E3 1231v3 | GA-Z97MX GAMING 5 | XFX R9 290 | 16GB RAM | CRUCIAL MX100 256GB | WD BLUE 1TB | EVGA SUPERNOVA 850W | CORSAIR 350D

Okay, yes I have considered a VPS. I even have one at the specific moment. I just prefer having the machine.

They CAN use multiple cores, but they don't do a great job at it... (i'm a modder, looked deeply into that specific code). They don't do multi-threaded ticks by default. But like I said, it would be nice to be able to run other stuff on it too.

16 GB of ram would be okay too, but I wouldn't be able to run the Minecraft with some other things.. as easily...

*looking at those builds...*

Okay, why have a video card on something that will run Ubuntu Server? :P

Also, I should have mentioned, 2.1 GHZ is SLOOOW IMHO. I would much prefer 3.0 or more...

HAHA Windows? pfft.

Remove Windows and the video card and the second one looks pretty nice to me. Comments?

Try and pick up an X5650 and an X58 motherboard that you can overclock on.

For like $200 if you're lucky you can get a CPU and a motherboard that seriously absorbs voltage and is way overclockable.

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

Oh, I'm an idiot. I didn't look to see that those CPUs don't have integrated graphics. I assume that's why theres a video card?

Honestly, I'm not sure if a 54 dollar motherboard is what I'm looking for. If it performs and is quality, fine.

EDIT:

This is what I'm to to so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/sci4me/saved/MDpQzy

I figure I may as well go all out.

Remember, even if Minecraft won't use all that CPU and RAM, if i run other stuff at the same time I'll need it (maybe not so much with the RAM but.. meh).

Also, another reason for more cores: I can link multiple MC servers into one. I.e. 4 seperate server processes, 4 seperate worlds, and a mod that lets me "jump" between them.
