Whether I'm doing nothing, or doing all the things my computer will decide it wants to crash every 10-20 minutes It's quite irritating. All my specs can be found in my signature.

This is my first computer build so I'm sure the error has something to do with how i installed everything. When my computer crashes none of the error lights turn on, on the motherboard. The screen goes black and everything shuts down. I'm convinced it's not a power problem, since the green light will remain on. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and since I don't have much time to type this out i'm not going to proof-read anything. Thanks so much.

Is it overclocked?

No

video driver?

ram in right slots?

oc or not?

what?

Yes

No

It's your hard drives mate!

I think this could be it. one of my hard drives makes a TERRIBLE noise sometimes. but it's stopped doing that. what could be wrong?

What do you mean by everything shuts down, does the system completely power off (fans no longer running etc.) or does it reboot. If it reboots do you get an unexpected shutdown error when you boot back in to Windows?

EVERYTHING shuts down and it wont reboot by itself.

A faulty hard drive shouldn't cause your whole system to power off. Make sure your expansion cards (GPU and what have you) are seated correctly and have the correct additional power cables connected, as well as your memory modules.

Make sure you aren't getting any overheating issues on the CPU as well by checking the temps in the BIOS, this isn't likely to be the problem as the CPU would most likely just be throttled back but you never know.

if the video driver is faulty the system can crash and require to be powered off and on again,

"AMDA00 Interface" - it has a yellow warning sign on it. I don't know what it is, could anyone tell me? And my computer just crashed about five minutes ago. How do I update BIOS?

The thing is, if it were my video card my motherboard would have a red light turn on by it. but there are no error lights turning on. which leads me to believe it's either the power supply (which i doubt) or a hard drive error. I think it could crash my system if it were my SSD but my issues have always been with my HDD, so I don't know if my hard drive crashing would be the issue either....

Sounds like a motherboard driver, I doubt you'd need to update the BIOS but search ASUS' site for your motherboard model  and it should take you to the latest BIOS update with instructions. On that note make sure you have up to date motherboard drivers installed.

* The LED indicator for the GPU is more of a POST test LED and is not indicative of GPU faults / driver issues, so I wouldn't rule it out.

* Could still the the PSU, but best to rule out anything else before looking at that.

* Again a storage device failure would not cause the whole system to power off, if that were the case you'd more likely see lockups, delayed write fail errors etc.

So, what you're saying is it's possible the issue is that the motherboard drivers aren't up to date? :o

It's always possible, just make sure you have the newest drivers installed anyway, can't hurt. You can update the BIOS as well if you like but I can't see that being the problem, I'm assuming you've very recently built this, so you've purchased the parts recently, if so the BIOS will likely be up to date out of the box.

Anyway did you check that everything is connected properly and that the temps in BIOS are OK?

all the temps are okay, cpu gets about 42c right after my computer crashes but quickly drops to 30c. all other temps were great. as far as i can tell everything is plugged in properly and all drivers are up to date. and it is still crashing. I ran some stress tests with prime95 and it says everything is fine.................

Hmm odd, honestly I am thinking PSU, there are very few things that will cause a PC to completely power off.

If you know anyone you can borrow a PSU from then do that and test it, the only other thing I can think of at the moment is checking the GPU power connectors, if they are 8 pin then make sure that it is definitely PCI-E 8-pin connected to it and not auxiliary motherboard 8-pin power, I have managed to hook up an 8-pin PCI-E to a motherboard before (was a cheap PSU mind with no labelling), it didn't like that :)

My computer has been able to run for months with no problem regarding random and frequent shut downs. I tried re-installing my PSU and cleaned  my computer. the issue still persists and so I've decided I'm going to reformat both my drives. Do you, or anyone else know how to do that without getting rid of windows 8.1 ?

it doesnt sound like ur drives it sounds like u have a faulty psu or graphics card

remove the graphics card.. use the on board graphics and tell me back if the problem persists

My PSU used to have the fan facing down, it's facing up now. The fan isn't turning on startup or at anytime. it kinda jiggles a little like it's trying to but fails to make even an inch difference in where it's at.

EDIT:

I can run my computer for 30 minutes doing stress test with prime and it doesn't shut down, so I don't think it has anything to do with overheating... I'm so lost.

most PSU dont have serviceable parts inside.. do u still have a warranty? it would be nice if you had another PSU u could use to confirm

I don't have another PSU. I should still have a warranty, but  i'm not totally convinced that the problem is the PSU yet. I read something that says the PSU fan doesn't turn on unless it gets really hot. which, I don't think i'll be able to get it hot enough to test.

I removed the graphics card, plugged my HDMI into my Motherboard and an error light for the graphics card came up (there was no graphics card), I never got the image to transfer from the mobo to monitor. I plugged my graphics card back in and its all working fine. I'm not sure if the crashing issue still exists.
