Hi.I am looking to buy a new gpu. Really confused between 970 and 780. currently ASUS is selling their direct cu II 780 at $330 and 970 is also similarly priced.

I am going to use this gpu mainly for rendering, modeling and some gaming[not too much 1080p gaming is enough for me and I am not a hardcore gamer].

Mainly going to use blender and 3ds max for my 3d modeling and animation purposes. I am not a professional. I really am torn between these two. need suggestion

N.B: I am not going to overclock as i have heard that overclocking tends to shorten the gpu's lifetime. But i would really love to have some notes on overclocking as well.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards.

780 is faster unless you get a beast of a 970. The 970 however will be easier to SLI in the future, draw less power, and supports DX12 and MFAA (which the 780 probably wont).

Also, overclocking doesn't really affect lifespan if you're not stupid...so long as you keep the voltage/temps at safe/reasonable levels then you will be replacing it long before it dies on you.

The Gigabyte G1 gaming GTX 970. There is no better card for the money unless you can get a sick discount on a 780 Ti and even then you're cutting it pretty close

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

They are about as fast but the Gigabyte G1 regularly breaks 1500MHz in manual OC's which makes it faster

GTX 970 although I would try & stretch your budget for the GTX 980 (non-reference designed)
