"Active" DP cables?

Go to solution Solved by Joshyy,

Doesn't matter for Displayport, it outputs both signals HDMI and VGA can be converted to passively.

Would work fine, but if you can find a cheaper one that'll work too.

I dont think the 7870 has a thunderbolt port

Normal DP is just DP, and can output HDMI or DVI via an active adapter.. There's also Dual-Mode DisplayPort which transfers a passive HDMI or single-link DVI signal over the DP interface. Most ports are Dual-Mode.

VGA requires an active adapter no matter what, as does dual-link DVI.

Sorry this is false. Yes you can use a passive adapter but that will limit you to just a stand alone display.

But if you are looking for an eyefinity setup you will need an active Displayport to DVI adapter. This is the only way. This will cost you about $30 (I think. Don't quote me on the price).

Correct, you can only output one display from one displayport, unless you want to get a hub, which can split it into 3 or even 6, which will cost $150 or so. But that is not what OP was asking.

You will not need an active adapter, as DisplayPort is digital, just a passive. (I have a passive displayport to HDMI splitter) neither will you need one for VGA as it incidentally has Analogue output too (you gotta love DP!)

DisplayPort allows native daisychaining, that isn't just part of Thunderbolt.

And he wasn't talking about that. He was talking about the fact that most CrossFire cards don't have enough Dual-Mode DP to support eyefinity purely off of it, so at least one display needs to be on an active adapter.

Please do some research.

Please re-read OPs post. He's asking if that adaptor would convert from DP to HDMI, as on the Radeon 7870 to run 3 monitors, (eyefinity) one of those is required to be a Displayport connection due to timing issues which means only one HDMI and DVI port can be used. Nowhere does he mention anything about daisy chaining using hubs.

Please do your research :)

I'm aware what the OP is asking, my daisy chain side comment was meant to reference a side comment, not the OP's original point.

The adapter he listed is not active. If the mini displayport connector on his 7870 isn't dual-mode, then that adapter will not work. Most are, but he really does need to find out because previous Radeon generations didn't use dual-mode.
