Random Shutdown (moved from GPU topic)

Hi All,

Whenever I play BF4 or run Valley, about 5-10 minutes in my recently built PC shuts down. No BSOD or anything, just like someone flicked off the power supply.

I can recreate this issue by running Unigine Valley on Ultra preset with IntelBurnTest running behind it.

I haven't taken a look at my RAM yet, but I have MemTest86+ on a USB ready to run tonight.

My specs are:

FX-6300 (non OC'd)

Sapphire R7 265 (non OC'd)

ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 mobo

8GB Kingston ValueRam

Cougar SL500 500W PSU

I have a feeling it could be a faulty power supply, Any suggestions on what the issue could be? Or anything else I should be testing?

This happened on my old laptop being a problem with heat so I would recommend to test that. 500w is likely enough for what you use.

Have you been monitoring temperatures?

Yeah, I was monitoring temps during my stress test. The GPU core didnt go above 65C, and the CPU stayed at least 10C inside its thermal margin. I may as well try running the test with the PC on my desk and no side panels.

Well, if that doesn't work, check your cables both inside and out of your pc, you never know if you loosely plugged in your pc.

Is your power supply hot to the touch? Is the fan in it spinning? How long have you had this rig?

I have had the same issue, it is a PSU failure. The over voltage protection randomly kicks in witch causes this issue. It seams to occur random, but only under load. A friend of mine(micro electrical engineer) tested the PSU and it works just properly fine, just the protection kicks in.

He said also try to use a thicker, high quality power cable.

Hmm...

Open Command Prompt Admin (right click launch as administrator) and type "sfc /scannow"

let me know if it brings up any errors.

I had crashes like this recently, I thought it was the voltage on my CPU was to low, ended up being a WHEA error.

Nope, PSU feels pretty normal, the fan is running fine, and I built the rig yesterday.

Did you flash your motherboard BIOS to the latest version? Did you also do a clean install of windows?

Nope, no errors or 'integrity violations'.

Ok, well it could also be AMD drivers, crashes from them are pretty common... are you running the latest beta drivers?

Yep, I made sure I've got the latest everything. I've underclocked my GPU and CPU to see if its the PSU not pumping out enough juice.

It may be a driver problem. remove and re-install. Also, uncheck the system failure automatic restart form system settings. Assuming you're on Windows 8, drag your mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen, right click when you see the start option pop up and click System>Advanced System Settings, now you're in system properties, go to Startup and Recovery settings, under System Failure uncheck Automatically Restart, apply, hit ok. Hopefully it'll help out more with solving the issue instead of just restarting. If you see a blue screen, then it may not be your power supply. If it restarts, well then it just may be a PSU issue.
