This will be my first build and I kind of want it to be futureproof. The main thing i'm undecided on is the CPU I know that for gaming the i7 isnt really needed and I could get a i5 but if i wanted to futureproof it the i7 would be better right? I'm also studying game development this year at uni and was thinking that a i7 might come in handy for that somehow.

Here you go with room to spare on the PSU for 2-way Crossfire R9 290. If you do not plan to Crossfire then just get a decent 550-600W PSU such as the CS/RM550, EVGA NEX 650, etc.

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861
