So i have been wondering this for a little bit, and other may too, but i am thinking of X99 in a few months but due to money, i can only afford 8GB of DDR4 RAM, I was wondering that because X99 have 8 RAM slots and the 8GB kit is 2x4GB, can i add another 2x4GB in the future, so basically 2 sets of 2x4GB ram kits if they are the same type of ram?

They should, but there's no guarantee with mixing RAM, even of the same model. It's unlikely they they won't work together, but there is a chance.

Yes, you can.

If it's an upgrade, I would advise to hold off X99 for a bit unless you really need it. RAM prices will come down and the speeds and variety will go up in time.

Dont worry, It will be atleast December before i am able to buy SOME parts for my new build lol

Yes why wouldn't they? If you get 1 stick now and add another one later it will still work fine. Also X99 really isn't worth it unless you are doing extreme video editing or rendering. For gaming a i5 or i7 is fine. Don't waste your money.

I have actually made a X99 build cost as much or less as my "Upcoming Z97 Build" in my sig :)

All the more tempting to buy

Yes you can upgrade it just fine that way. However I'd recommend going Z97 unless you are doing content production.

Please elaborate on what you mean by "i can only afford 8GB of DDR4 RAM" is that in-terms of 1*8GB dimm  or 2*4GB or running 4 DDR4 dimms in quad channel?

I would highly suggest & recommend after reading from ^ this point you choose carefully where to spend your money on. You don't seem very needn't of the X99 platform & I think Z97/87 (based on your decision) is 100% a better choice for;

  • price (buying into a new technology is expensive)

1. I meant at the moment and in the future ill be only able to spend money on 2x 4GB DDR4 in dual channel, and in the future future, i am wondering if i can buy a second kit of 2x 4GB DDR4 RAM to add.

2. I know i dont need  X99, but it wont hurt it, especially considering it would be the same price as the Z97 upcoming build in my sig. I will be gaming, photoshop, video editing, and 3D designing

I guess so but it'll be quite an investment considering we've only had Haswell-E in the consumer market for like 13 days I think but it was recently released (you know what I mean)

Relatively speaking if you did buy the lowest i7 in the 2011-3 sku would you know you could make the cost for paying that price worth buying a slightly better spec'd & performing desktop machine?

Basically this in conveying to you; can you make this processor/platform you're buying into worth more that of the next i7 in the line-up? <- besides that ify point #you'dbettermakeitworthyourwhile

Honestly, I want the most performance for the money and X99 gives me that more, however with the Broadwell CPU's coming up, do you think I should get 1150 for that?

Only tell will tell buddy. Broadwell will very much display even lower power states, better inter-grated graphics & if it's possible more cores for a mainstream platform. Ofc more features. I haven't read much recently about what hidden attributes it'll offer. Currently there is a huge difference between the present haswell-refresh compared to haswell-e (You can watch Linus's or Tom's video <-OC3D TV about it/more about the 5960X extreme edition but about the processor architecture tock)

I can't decide that but Z97/X99 will be around for a while so choose wisely. I know that Broadwell will be the last micro-processor architecture on the lga 1150 socket until skylake & X99 haswell-e won't be having a socket revision for a while.

What kind of budget are we talking about? between 1-2 grand? If so you'd be better off with Z97 although I do recall using pcpartpicker.com to create a spec list based on the 4930K for about $2000 dollars no os/keyboard/mouse/monitor.

Have you already got a power supply? since you didn't include one with the pcpartpicker?

X99 - Link : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/XmqPvK

780 is around $400 but if you wanted the 780 ti then the starting price is of $560.

Z97 - Link :http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vx6pD3

Z97 FTW from evga but I might've decided to go with the Maximus 7 hero which is about $50 more

BTW I think you cheated a little bit on the Z97 build. Quite a few $0.00 prices.

Anything marked 0.00 are parts im getting in the future. I wanted the raw price of the components to show up

Edit: I honestly chose my parts wisely and all for a reason. Your build may be too compromising for my liking.
