My friend is looking to get into the PC gaming scene and has a dilemma: He wants a laptop but wants the power of a desktop. He is obviously open to getting either a desktop or a laptop but he wants to know he is getting the price to performance. Since he's my friend I need this to be the best PC for his money, which is $1000 USD.

There are 3 options:

1.) Get a desktop for $1000 with a 1080p monitor. 1080p gaming, I really don't know what games he's playing but generally a good computer is good for all games.

2.) Get a desktop and a cheaper laptop.

3.) A full out laptop for $1000.

He tried getting the G550JK, never showed up. Let's see what you guys and girls can find.

I think option 1 and 2 make sense, option 3 isn't a good idea imo.

Desktops are better for gaming imo, you can select the hardware, you have room to upgrade as well as room to cool the components better allowing you to overclock.

Now there are some good gaming laptops out there, but they tend to be fairly bulky so they not very portable anyway, they typically run hot and are less powerful than desktops and they tend to be quite expensive.

I assume he games a lot and hates Macs, right?

He doesn't hate macs, his family had the 1440p IPS screen Mac AIO computer, Idk what it was called. He just wants Windows for a change.

Lenovo X1 Carbon?

That's quite a bit over 1k and the specs are that of a $700 laptop.

Specs aren't everything unless you're a gamer, my friend.

I don't think gaming laptops are worth it under $1K. Build a desktop with a 280X or something.

The way I look at it your first option is the best one. Reasons why.

  1. It's easily upgradable with your friend for the future
  2. With a laptop you are stuck as you can not upgrade it at all unless its ram or hdd to ssd
  3. You can always go "up" with desktops.
  4. Desktops are worth the money, laptops are good for daily activities but in all seriousness I would rather game on a desktop then a laptop any day.
  5. Laptops are expensive for what they are. Most gaming laptops are 1,500+ you can build a hell of a desktop for that.

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.
