Just considering building a NAS for the office. I work in Portugal in a web and mobile development company, with around 15 people, mostly developers and three 2d designers.

We need a NAS for storage, 6TB should be enough for now and the near future. I figured out a DIY FreeNas Server is cheaper and reliable option.

The budget is no more than 800$. What do you guys think about this build for RAIDZ1 (6TB usable space)?

CPU: AMD A6-6400K 3.9GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($57.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus F2A85-M2 Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard  ($83.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Cooler Master Elite 430 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $783.94

Intergraded raid controllers STINKS donkey.

also if it's for business use I HIGHLY DO NOT recommend a diy as you have zero support and you dont wanna be the guy on the grill when it goes south

do yourself a favor and get a synology.

also go with 3tb drives. you can get 3 of them and do synology hybrid raid and have 6tb storage.

a DS412+ is 650 at ncix, i didnt look but you may be able to find one for a bit cheaper.

3tb red is 140 each.

knocks over your budget but it will be safer.

Hey there, since you are also considering buying a NAS device, I could suggest you to take a look at the WD My Cloud EX4.

It is a four-bay NAS device, which will fit your needs. You can get it with 4 WD Red drives, specifically designed for home and small office NAS systems.

The EX4 supports a capacity of up to 16 TB and a RAID 0, 1 or JBOD can easily be set up. You can find some more info here:

Hope this helps.
