Windows won't start

Go to solution Solved by SlayerOfHellWyrm,

Awesome to here. Sad my suggestions did not lead to a result, however, if mark the thread as solved, others having a similar problem could see what you did to fix it (mark your post above as the solution), and they could try that themselves.

Hi so I was using my pc as normal and then one day it stopped working and it was something as minor as the hdmi port not being liked by the chord on my pc. So I panicked and called a pc repair company and just a few hours before they came I fixed it. Then the next day when I thought it was all fixed I plugged my pc back into my room and used spotify before going to bed and turning it off.

The following day I tried booting it up and it got stuck at the "Starting Windows" screen. It's not frozen because the flag is moving on the screen, but it won't go any further. So I just tried fixing it by going into safe mode and couldn't find anything wrong so I just left safe mode and rebooted then I got stuck at the same starting screen. I tried getting into safe mode again and then I got blocked by a avg .sys file. I tried restoring but it came back with an error in the restore screen (it was something like 0x80ffff) and I found I couldn't restore from any of my restore points. I've also tried resetting the CMOS because that worked once, not for the same thing but I thought it was worth a try. Also holding down the on button on the pc case while the power chord was out (I just heard that fixes things). Nothing has worked for me.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate (I wanted the ultimate name because it looked cool), the cpu is an Intel i3, 8GB of ram and a single 1TB HDD. I use a Z87 motherboard as well.

Please help I have my exams soon and my notes are on there. I really don't want to scrap the pc or plug the HDD into a friends pc to retrieve the files but I will if I have to.

Boot into advanced startup (F8 on boot), and go into the adavanced section, and then command prompt, and when you start the command prompt run the following:

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /rebuildbcd

That's it. Once you type exit, which I forgot to include at the end, it should automatically either try to boot, or, return you to the advanced startup menu where you can select "continue to Windows". Hopefully those 3 lines fixed any errors present in your Master Boot Record, BCD, or boot partition.

After I exited the system recovery options I tried booting and nothing just the same screen. Should I try do the bootrec thing then system restore?

System restore should usually be your 3rd option.

1st tends to be booting to LKGC (Last Known Good Configuration)

2nd is what I posted

3rd is System Restore

4a is Windows 8/8.1 Refresh

4b is Fresh OS install

I list them in that order, because each progressive option does more damage to your current data, to fully wiping it. The first 2 options won't really affect any data you have. 3rd, will uninstall software and change registry keys that have been changed since the restore point. 4a, will keep all files, but, remove all installed apps/programs, and 4b will obviously remove everything.

Would I be able to take out my current HDD and put a new one in and write to that the OS then wipe the OS off of the old HDD (I'll call the current HDD "HDD1" and the new one "HDD2" to be easy) being HDD1 and put a new OS on HDD1 then make HDD1 the default and taking out HDD2?

It's confusing when I read that over

Not if your OS, and Data are on the same partition. If you partitioned HDD1 so that it had a partition specifically for Windows, and then one specifically for Data, then yes, but if the entire drive is 1 partitions, I know of know easy way of doing that, without simply copying all of the data you want from HDD1, onto HDD2, after giving it a boot, and data partition to keep things separate.

Hi just commenting to say I got my computer working. I looked up and found WMIC and tried it and that didn't work but i think it did something because I also tried a system restore and that didn't work but when I tried a Last Known Config it booted up with no issues just one steam game was gone. I think it was AVG's fault to I uninstalled it and installed Avasto i think thats what its called. But thank you for helping me before and hopefully people will see your tips
