Alright so here's the situation. I have two PSU's in front of me, and two rigs I'm building both have 6-core AMD CPU's (one is FX and one is Phenom II X6) and both have Radeon HD 6870s. The thing is one of these PCs will be going to my friend and I'm keeping one, and I want to keep the better PSU of the two. Which PSU is better between these two?

EVGA 500B (apparently can deliver 480W)

Antec NeoPower HE 550W (apparently can deliver 650W)

The NeoPower HE550W could be the better of the two, less the lack of an 80Plus rating.

The only issue with the Antec is when it is under load, it can have lower than usual readings on the 5V rail.

That being said, I would keep the EVGA PSU, as their customer service is one that will never really leave you hanging.

The evga 500b because the antec isn't 80 plus or bronze.

It's just because it's not certified. When tested, the Antec can actually achieve 80+ Silver levels of efficiency.

evga. efficiency goes down with extra power overkill.

When pulling 650W from it, even though it's rated at 550W, it still gets 81% efficiency.

Just to add to the confusion...

The Antec is discontinued but was made by Seasonic.

EVGA still carries the 500B but it is made by HEC.

I would give the edge to the Seasonic unit but just by a hair.

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!

IIRC, the Antec Neo HE550 is a Seasonic S12 unit internally. It's an indy-regulated PSU, so it should be better than the EVGA in respect to voltage stability; however, considering how it is a model back in ~2006, the usage of OST and Su'scon caps, you probably would want to recapped the PSU.

Ok, I was thinking it would be more efficient but reading over the past comments it seems I was wrong. I apologize. You learn something everyday, thanks.

Not disagreeing with choosing the 500B, I'm disagreeing with

EVGA. Turst me. Why? Coz. EVGA.
