I'm thinking of buying the lenovo U410 from a seller on craigslist. I however don't like how it has an i5 with a passmark of 3099 (i5-3317U). What I want to know is if it is soldered or socketed. If it is soldered can I at least put 16gb of RAM on it? It is gonna be used for some serious multitasking (web browsing + java programming) and maybe small 3d rendering tasks (SketchUp).

All u series processors are soldered (Ball Grid Array), so you are stuck with it.

As for RAM, your processor's memory controller supports 32GB, so you are fine there, and only limited by DIMM slots on the motherboard.  I will check around to find that info in a minute.

Cool thanks man. Now I'm crossed between two laptops. This Lenovo U410 or a Samsung NP350E5C w/ i7 and 8gbs RAM. The struggle is real.

It seems the Lenovo has 2 204pin DIMMs available, so assuming BIOS support it should allow 16GB of RAM to be installed without issue.  Here is a disassembly video used to determine that

As for the samsung, If my quick google search is right, you are competing a untrabook with a standard laptop. The choice would be obvious for me (the Samsung). Is it a quad core i7?

Yeah it is a quad core i7. It is $400 from the craigslist seller, I'm sure my dad could do his negotiation magic and get it to $350 or something. The U410 is $350 and it might be possible to get it for $300. The thing is that the U410 is great for school since it is thin (,86" i believe) and the Samsung is 1.34". The Samsung is also a 1lb more. THE STRUGGLE.

In that case, I personally would go for the Samsung. However, for schooling, I would go to a workstation class machine, as they can take a beating far better than the comsumer level stuff.

I guess, the lighter the better, but also take into account that the difference in weight is a loaf of bread. Not much if any strain added at all.
