So, I have this laptop:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215663

When playing games like trine 2, or bioshock, the thing overheats, and turns off.

But, the fan doesn't even go to 100%, or anywhere near that. It doesn't ramp up at all.

Is there some setting that I am missing that would make it so that the fan would actually ramp up?

I'm on the same boat with you here. I was thinking about asking the same question. Mine is an Aspire V3-571G (specs on my sig). Seems that Acer laptops doesn't hold itself well enough after a decent usage time (I've used for 2 years+)

Spoiler

You could use a separate laptop cooler, like the one linus made that crime scene video of, since i'm guessing you're gaming at a desk anyways.

Option 2: buy a PC

CPU: i7 - 2600kGPU: GTX 1070Mobo: intel somethingRAM: Corsair XMS3 @1600Mhz (8GB)SSD: Crucial MX100 256GB. HDD: WD Green 1TB . Case: Cooler Master HAF XB EVO Monitors: LG 25UM65-P and Benq 2200HD Keyboard: Corsair vengeance K70 FPS Red switch. Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Core. Headset: Steelseries Siberia V2

I have a PC. I just use a laptop when going over to a friends house and what not. I do not like lugging around 40kg

Even with a laptop cooler, it still doesn't help at all

I think from this point you really have three choices maybe....

Choice 1. Get a good laptop cooler and use it to cool the bottom of the laptop.

Choice 2. Order or buy some thermal paste, take apart your laptop and basically clean the whole inside and reapply the thermal paste.

Choice 3. If you still have warranty, call them up and explain to them your problem and maybe send it in for a swap or fix.

Wanna hang out with me and people like @Theslsamg, @ Ssoele, @BENTHEREN, @Lanoi, @Whiskers, @_ASSASSIN_, @Looney, @WunderWuffle, and @nsyedhasan. Well.... Check out: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/48484-unofficial-linustechtips-teamschnitzel-server-teamspeak/

As above mentioned to replace the thermal paste would help alot.

The Laptop of my Mother had the same problem, when i opened it there was so much dust and when i cleaned everything it was fine.

Try first to clean it when it doesn't help replace the thermal paste if it still overheat and shut down bring it back to them and see if they can fix it.
