Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, couldn't find an area that dealt with just server questions so I thought this would be the next closest thing.

Hi, I'm looking into buying a old server off of ebay to host the latest minecraft tekkit mod pack. In the past I've run the tekkit server on a q6600 2.4ghz with 4gb of ram that was laying around and that didn't cut it with what me and my friends do on the server. So since I have some extra money now, I thought I would spend it buying a legitiment server that I could both use for minecraft and possibly for personal use later on. I'm currently looking at these two servers but I can't decide.

Also for those of you who don't know minecraft, is primarily a single core run so for those who know more about server optimizing and such, is there a way to sort of consolidate multiple cores into a virtual single core that won't cause parallel lags when data is processing? If this is possible can someone point me in the right direction as to how to get this done as its one of the main reasons why I haven't just the bought the server with 24gb of ram.

I would actually look more into getting a VPS solution from a company like CreeperHost who run dedicated Minecraft servers. These older servers often use a lot of power even at low load which can cost you in the long run.

Out of those two, I would get the dual L5320 model. A couple of reasons behind this: It's a shorter case overall - trying to store a 700mm deep server case at home is a big thing as most cupboards aren't that deep. Secondly, it includes drive caddies as far as I am aware - the sleds inwhich the drives sit.

Do you have a place to put those server? why not build a server pc? Why not use feed the beast, it is updated more often and it is supported by mod authors, tekkit isnt. and it should have been posted in networking but a mod will fix it.

Nah, that'd be killed in an instant. 4-8GB of RAM, dual or quad core at 2.5Ghz atleast is what we used to run before we upgraded to some serious gear but eventually closed down.

oh well doesnt it depend on the amount of people on the server?

joel, its more based on what you build in the game really. The amount of people just usually adds to the chance that there will be a lot more cpu/ram intensive things built for the server side to compute 24/7. As for the storage and the wattage , it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The current electric bill I sit on is about 30 dollars so honestly I'm already using a lot less than the norm, especially in California. Also I doubt I will have it on for more than 3 months straight, after that I'll probably turn it on occasionally to get some side projects done. Its mainly a server just for the breaks when my fellow colleagues and I have nothing to do lol. I just don't want to have to deal with vps cause IMO they over charge for the amount of computing power and ram you get for a vps.

Fair enough. :)

Just wondering what did you do to the serious gear to make tekkit run better? From my experience on the q6600 and the 4gb of ram, the server always ran on only one or two cores and almost never on the 3rd and 4th core while I was hosting it on a ubuntu x64 system. Since it did that, I always had tick issues after tons of quarry were built and my friends decided to form factions and start wars.

We weren't running Tekkit. There were about 3 classic servers (lava being one of them) as well as a premium server and we were spread across 4 4GB RAM, quad core 2.8 VPS's but then went to a single dual quad core with HT and 24GB of RAM - never had an issue thereafter.
