Friends PC Upgrade

Go to solution Solved by SpecTre12345,

I have given him a recommendation what CPU and graphics card he could get, this being a GTX 760 and an i5 4690 there is just one problem, he has a Corsair VS 450w power supply and I think it might not be enough to drive these new components and I have also looked at the 750ti but this may not be powerful enough.

Would he need to upgrade his power supply or would it be ok to use?

No he would not need to upgrade his power supply, 450w is more than enough since he won't be overclocking.

Hello,

My friend is looking to upgrade his CPU and Graphics Card for games such as DayZ, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs.

He currently has an Intel Pentium G3430 (socket 1150) and GT630 and plays in 720p or less in games, his monitor is native 1080p.

Cheers,

Mark.

Quote him or tag him or else he won't be able to see your reply.

R9 280 + 4690K as the other guy said.

A K series is not needed as my friend won't be overclocling another thing is the 760 is cheaper as it is going for £162 on scan.co.uk

It may not be needed now but it might in the future.

A R9 280 is a better performer so paying 20 quid more is a good option.

EDIT: Or 10 more for a MSI R9 280: http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-R9-280-Gaming-Graphics/dp/B00IYD0K9Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404508316&sr=8-1&keywords=R9+280

Remember if you do a nice OC on the R9 280 you will get the same performance as a stock R9 280X.

He might be able to pull it off on his PSU. Especially since I believe you guys use 220V.

Read through this article from PCPer. http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/MSI-Radeon-R9-280-3GB-Gaming-Review-Tahiti-Continues-Its-Run

It's a solid gain on a 760 for the small additional cost. Look at the power consumption.

Also measured his case and the XFX R9-280 933M just about fits in his current case

The extra GHz on a i5 4690 won't be that helpful and the k variant is out of the question due to the PSU. So I suggest this:

According to Cooler Master Outervision this is about 408 watts on 90% load. I did some guessing as to what your internal components are so check the link if you want an exact read from them.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£140.39 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 280 3GB Double Dissipation Video Card  (£158.99 @ Aria PC)
Total: £299.38
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Nvidia Alternative

About 402W according to Cooler Master Outervision at 90% load.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£140.39 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB TWIN FROZR Video Card  (£225.32 @ Scan.co.uk)
Total: £365.71
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You gotta do you girl. I always say you gotta do you. And if he's doing him, then who's doing you? Because right now, it seems like no one's doing you.

PCPer pulled 358 watts on 110V with a 3960X and the R9 280 from MSI.

The 280 is also a good bit cheaper then the 770 at 225.

That's amazing but did it take into account just the CPU and GPU or everything? Also yeah AMD is way better for the price in this case. I just offered the Nvidia version because it seems he was gunning for Nvidia from the start.

In the chart it says Entire System.

I used the power calculator and I told my friend the wattage needed for the new CPU and GPU and he said he'd play it safe and get the 760 instead of the r9 280

That's not a wise idea. For basically the same price you end up getting about 10 FPS more in most games. While it's not exact it is a noticeable difference. If he wanted an AMD card that performs the same or slightly better then a 760 then a 270X would be the card to get. The R9 280 is a step above the 270X and they are priced very close to each other and with an overclock you start to come close to stock R9 280X performance. All in all it makes an R9 280 hard to beat on the performance per dollar.

Combine the fact he is using 220V house current he should be fine. His performance per dollar would go down compared to what he could get with an R9 280.

My friend has chosen the 760 as he can stick with the current power supply he has and he also doesn't like AMD as their CPU performance is poor
