HDMI DVI Problems

Go to solution Solved by RomeoTango,

Got reaction on another forum.

Oke i'l explain in my best english.

My graphics card has 2 dvi, 1 hdmi and 2 mini-dp slots. I have 2 monitors, monitor 1 and monitor 2 (for explenation).

I started with both my monitors hooked up to grfx card with dvi cable.

Because i change the position of my pc 1 dvi cable couldn't reach the pc anymore so i bought an 3m hdmi cable.

So i took out the dvi connector that goes into the pc from monitor 1. Next i changed the dvi cable from monitor 1 with hdmi cable and inserted it in my card.

I left the dvi from monitor 2 in the place where it was. (2e slot of the card)

It din't work. After messing about, i changed the dvi connector to the pc from monitor 2 in the slot where first the dvi from monitor 1 was.

Sazhaam it worked.......

I dont know why, probably because something with the card connectors...

I hope you all can understand it

Thx all for the effort!

Hey Guys,

I have 2 monitors and both connected with a dvi to the pc.

Now i moved my desk and my pc under the desk stands in a corner were 1 of my dvi cable just dint reach the pc.

So i bought a HDMI cable that is longer and i hooked it up but now i cant seem to get the second monitor working.

(I now have 1 monitor on HDMI and 1 on DVI)

What I mean is that both monitors work fine on their own but they wont work togheter!

I get an error everytime i click the extend to button.......

Help me!

Thx!

To clarify: do you have a dedicated graphics card where both the DVI and HDMI cables have been plugged? Have you updated video drivers recently? AMD and NVIDIA both have easily accessible software to do that for you.

CPU: i5 4670k • Cooler: Corsair H100i • Motherboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER • RAM: Crucial Ballistix Elite 2x 8GB • Storage: Samsung 840 250GB SSD, 2x WD Red 3TB • GPU: EVGA GTX 780 3GB • PSU: Corsair RM750W • Case: Corsair 750D • Mouse: Razer Naga 2012 (I actually use the thing for productivity/media buttons) • Keyboard: Ducky Shine 3 w/ Browns - Green LED • Monitor: Asus PB278Q 27" 2560 x 1440, ASUS PB238Q 23" 1920x1080 • Lighting: 2m NZXT Sleeved Blue LED Strip • pcpartpicker.com/p/3cHfZ

That's a good start at least. Completely re-installing the driver software should repopulate your settings, if that's what is causing an error.

Do you have any other connectors you can test with? Maybe a VGA cable lying around.

Wel i tried again ,by moving the monitor a little closer for trying, with the DVI. And they work. But i cant understand why it would work with the hdmi.

It has to do something with the combination then....

HDMI and DVI dont work.

DVI and DVI do work.

Honestly, there's nothing I can think of that you can really do at this point. If you're adventurous, you could try taking the graphics card out of your machine and run the two monitors on mobo video outs. Assuming that works, it's probably just some kind of bug in the driver and there isn't much you can do.

But that's a bit overkill IMO.

You think a converter works?

HDMI to DVI? Or should i just buy a longer "expensive" dvi cable

I'd rather not suggest you have to buy anything, because you shouldn't . Did you try a different HDMI cable, or switch which monitor was running off HDMI and which was using DVI?

Found it:

"I think you underline something important: Dual DVI is NOT equivalent to DVI+ HDMI. The issue is that with dual DVI you can clone and extend the desktop, while with HDMI - the moment you connect the cable the DVI image will disappear. Are you familiar with the Digital Rights Bla Bla ? This is the reason. NVidia are blocking their drivers and prevent them to clone or extend with HDMI plugged in because they somehow assume that this will prevent video pirates (go figure).

So the answer to your question is - unfortunately not. BR" (http://superuser.com/questions/70555/can-i-get-dual-monitor-support-2xdvi-from-my-dvihdmi-graphics-card)

So basically you swapped which monitor was running on HDMI and DVI, then used a different DVI port of your graphics card? Alright, thanks for the info!
