Case Fan Connection Question

Go to solution Solved by scaryjam823,

If you connect the fan to cpu opt it will base the speed of the fan on the temp of the processor and the fan curve set for the processor. You can use it, the motherboard doesn't know if you have a water cooler installed or not :P. But I would just buy a splitter or buy some 3 pin connectors and pins, then wire the two fans together. Doesn't matter which you do, both results are the same.

@Bazurite

Hi, I have a z97mx-gaming motherboard by Gigabyte, and am planning on using 4 case fans in my build. The motherboard has 3 case fan headers, and 2 CPU fan headers. The 2 CPU fan headers are labelled CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT. I will be using the CPU_FAN header for my cooler.

So, I would like to know if I can or can't use the CPU_OPT header for a case fan? The manual says this fan header is for a cpu water cooler, so I am unsure if I can use it.

The alternative I have thought of is to use a header splitter for the 2 fans at the top of my case. Just looking for opinions and recommendations, thanks.

Case: Bitfenix Prodigy M

Cooling top: 2x 120mm Bitfenix Spectre Pro

Cooling back: 1x 140mm Bitfenix Spectre Pro

Cooling bottom: 1x 230mm Bitfenix Spectre Pro

All case fans use 3 pins, all headers or 4.

Thanks for the help,

                                  Baz

As said. I'd like to add, though. CPU_OPT isn't only for watercooling. Its for solutions where you need to connect multiple fans to react cpu temperature. Like pump on CPU_FAN and fans with splitter to CPU_OPT. Or having air cooler with two fans.
