Hello,

I'd like to ask what is the current consensus on pre-applied pastes on CPU coolers? Are they fine for the first year or two or should I ideally immediately clean it and repaste with new paste?

I plan on buying Noctua NH-L12S to cool 7800X3D in Fractal Design Terra case. Since it is very small form factor and pretty hot chip, each ° matters. It has been years since I last built a PC so I don't know about this now.

Thanks for answers beforehand!

Pre-applied always for me.  It's just laid out nicely, and pastes don't deviate all that much.   I will change said paste in a couple years, but then again I change all my pastes in 2-3 years regardless.

No, each degree does not matter if the chip is not thermally throttling (and you're not throttling with a 7800X3D), all you're doing is evacuating the heat from the case to the room better.

The chip doesn't give two shits about 60c or 85c.

Work makes heat, a cool chip just means you got it's heat away, it still got produced and it still went somewhere.

The Noctua NH-L12S doesn't come with pre-applied paste, it comes with a small tube of NT-H1 Thermal paste.

Its one of the best pastes on the market and one that I personally use on all my CPU's and GPU's, even if I dont use a Noctua cooler.

That being said, most Pre-Applied thermal pastes are plenty good enough and something I would not worry about.

if the pre applied is plenty, why not. And if you want a aftermarket one, why not. But if you gonna use a aftermarket one I highly suggest a phasechange
