Appreciate the reply! I’m running a 1440p setup and wondering how the 7800X3D stacks up against the 9700X when it comes to multitasking. I usually have music playing and a guide open while gaming, haha

That's not multi tasking, that's basic PC usage.  Both won't bat an eye, it's not anything remotely heavy.

People need to realize these cpus can have browsers open, music, discord, 2 dozen background tasks and TWO triple A games running at the same time.

My 7800x3d does that with ease.  Modern chips are stout

First-Time PC Build: Need Advice on CPU & Motherboard for Gaming and Resale Value!

This is my first time building a PC, and I've selected the following components so far:

Gigabyte WINDFORCE SFF GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB GPU (not purchased yet)

Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU cooler (purchased)

Samsung 990 Pro 2TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD (purchased)

SeaSonic Focus GX V4 ATX 3.0 (2024) 1000W 80+ Gold Certified fully modular ATX power supply (purchased)

Currently, I'm unsure about which CPU and motherboard to choose. I plan to mainly use this system for gaming, especially single-player games. I'd like this PC to last for 5-10 years with some minor upgrades along the way, and I also want to make sure that the CPU and  GPU and motherboard will hold their value well when I decide to sell them in the future.

Here are the CPU and motherboard bundle prices in my area:

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D + Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 – $498 USD

AMD Ryzen 7 9700X + Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 – $438 USD

Intel Core Ultra 7 265K + Gigabyte Z890 GAMING X WIFI7 – $456 USD

Could you kindly provide some suggestions for the CPU and motherboard combination that would best suit my needs?

Hey, welcome to the forums!

First of all, very solid choice for the components you already have.

As for the CPU and motherboard combo, I would already scrap anything Intel related. If you look at the path they are currently on, you cannot really expect great things in the future so if you want to upgrade later on you might be disappointed. Secondly AMD's becoming the favorite child of many gamers, so it might also play a role in the resale value later.

As for the choice between 9700x and 7800x3d, both are great to be honest. The latter will outperform in games, but it depends heavily on the game and resolution. So if you are on a tight budget, go for the 9700x. AMD promised support for the AM5 platform for a few more years, so maybe you could upgrade it in 2 years time or more.

Small edit: The 7800x3d could resell for a bit more later, simply because it is more known and popular.

Main machine:  Ryzen 9 9950x3D - Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5070ti OC 16GB  - Gigabyte X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7 - 64GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 - Seasonic FOCUS GX-1000 ATX3.1 - Lancool 207 digital - Artic liquid freezer III Pro - 2 x 27" AOC Q27G4X - WD SN850X 2TB - 2 x WD SN770 2TB

Remote client:  Razer Blade 15 (2020) base - i7 10750H - GeForce RTX 2060 - 16GB DDR4 3000MHz (only used for decoding streams from main machine)

No one can speculate with any certainty about resale 5-10 years in the future, prices could fluctuate immensely.  Where the 7800X3D is a workhorse now, would it even be worth it in 5 years compared to some new offering?

I would go with the 7800X3D combo because I've had it and the 7700X (which is almost the same as the 9700X) and the lows are better on an X3D chip for most games.

*Became. In 2019 the tide turned with 3000 series and 5000 series just stomped all over Intel

ANY PC you build today will sell for nearly scrap value in 10 years. I just sold an 8700K system (sans) GPU for all of 100$. That was a 1200$ system new. The wonder and the curse of technology is that it's always getting cheaper. Even 5 years down the road I wouldn't expect much more than 30% of what you pay today.
That being said, if you build an AM5 system now, you should be able to get at least the next gen as an upgrade if not two more generations

Appreciate the reply! I’m running a 1440p setup and wondering how the 7800X3D stacks up against the 9700X when it comes to multitasking. I usually have music playing and a guide open while gaming, haha

Yeah, AM5’s the way to go. That’s just how tech goes it still works, but everyone’s already moved on to something newer

Thanks for the help I think I’ll go with the 7800X3D after all

Appreciate the advice^^
