Budget (including currency): Around 1000$ CAD

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Battlefield 6, Anno 1800, Anno 117, Tarkov, etc

Other details:

My CPU died couple days ago and I would like to change the following parts:

CPU: (AMD Ryzen 7 5800X)only 3 years old

Motherboard: (ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING) would go for AM5 instead of AM4

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (4x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL16 (now it would be DDDR5)

My other parts I would keep are the following:

PSU: CORSAIR RM1000x

GPU: MSI RTX 3080 (might upgrade in a year)

SSD: Western Digital Black 1TB(Nvme)

I would like change the 3 parts I mentioned above and be future proof for atleast 4-5 years if it's possible. I play game on a 27inch monitor 60hz right now but I will also upgrade to a higher fresh rate monitor but keeping the 27inch and 1440p. I'm open for suggestions for monitors also.

I was looking into those parts for now but not sure if it's a good match or I should change something.

CPU: Ryzen 7 9700x or Ryzen 5 9600x

Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI

RAM: CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30

Maybe I forgot to mention some stuff so feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks in advance!

Meh

bit of a half-baked selection. Not bad could be better (also "future-proofing" aint a thing cause we cant predict how far gaming will go in terms of demanding better hardware even a year from now

Assuming you can reuse what you listed + the Cooler (which you didnt mention btw) I'd go with this for 1000$ CAD  (including a new monitor)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 4.5 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($343.96 @ shopRBC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WIFI6E ATX AM5 Motherboard  ($214.99 @ Memory Express)
Memory: TEAMGROUP T-Create Expert 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory  ($121.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Monitor: MSI MAG 275QF 27.0" 2560 x 1440 180 Hz Monitor  ($199.99 @ Amazon Canada)
Total: $880.93

I edit my posts for so if you saw a typo.... no you didn't, you are just crazy

Hello, thank you for answering.

My cooler is a Deepcool castle 280ex, I always had a Asus motherboard, hard to go with another brand but open to it. Is there another option other than the Gigabyte one? I don't need any crazy wifi I'm directly plugged in. For sure a PCI 5.0 would be great.

For the Ryzen 7 7700x, it would not be worth it to get a 9700x, runs cooler, has Zen 5 and let power hungry?

Not really that hard

You just  get another that isn't Asus one and voila (I'm taking the piss here btw and being a lil sarcastic so dont pay this part too much attention)

On a serious note, brand doesnt really (unless it's a no name one on vital components or a brand has a history of multiple poorly made products) and limiting yourself due to brand loyalty imho is poor practice cause you miss good deals

For gaming (since that is all you listed)? Performance doesnt justify the cost imo and (provided the PSU can handle which it can since you got a 1000w one) it wouldnt affect you too much even temps wise cause you have an AIO

Also also, since you have an AIO there are cheaper ram kit options with the same specs. The kit I chose was a "safe choice" since they were compatable with more air coolers that might not have the most ram clearance

If you are gonna make a more Value for money, worthwhile upgrade over a 3080 it would be a card that could benefit from PCIe 5.0 but you could realistically get other borads like a B650 one to save some cash since PCIe 4.0 is still good

(btw at the time I wrote the list that gigabyte one was the cheapest B850 one and since it is more than fine I just chose it cause having more for less money, aka wifi in this case, doesn't do much if any harm)

Other options that are also fine are these

Here's a build, pretty much top of the line for the CPU, with a good motherboard and fast RAM -

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rCJc4p

If you need 64GB of RAM, that's an option, considering how below my build is from $1000.

AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600g w/ Radeon Graphics | 16GB DDR4-3200 RAM | 256GB NVME SSD + 2TB HDD | Amazon Basics 2.0 Speakers

For sure I don't mind choosing another brand over Asus lol I will get one around 200$ and maybe put a bit more into the CPU. What do you think of the CPU (AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D) that the other person talked about?

Best gaming chip on the planet currently so there ain't much to say

8 cores 16 threads 3d Vcache Zen 5 etc etc and everything else everyone who has covered it and sang its praises

Really, it just is the plain best option for gaming but it also comes with a price hike which might blow your budget over the 1000$ CAD roof

For sure it's 638$ before tax at Canada Computer so for sure with a mobo around 200$, just with those to parts without the ram I will be pretty much at 1000$ but if I will see a good difference and it would be a better option for when I change my gpu to a 5000 series I will put a bit more money, even if I end up around the 1300$ it's ok.

No problem. You have about $300 to upgrade! Tweak it as you like, it's just a base system. What about the CPU?

If I look on this benchmark https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-9800X3D-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-9700X/m2356328vs4169      there's not much difference between a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and the Ryzen 7 9700X. So is it worth the 210$ more in price? I see that you get a 1 GHz more with the base clock but a lower Boost clock.

With all due respect, trusting userbenchmark is not a good move on your part to put it lightly

Techpowerup, Tomshardware, LTT, GamersNexus, Jays2cents etc etc those are some trustworthy sources

Userbenchmark is a an utter joke

Trust me before i buy I always check on LTT, Tomshardware and Jays2cents. I ws at work so didn't have time to check their videos on those CPUs. From you knowledge is there a big performance increase for the 210$ difference?

Depends on the game and resolution but on average it is about 13-15% better

On shooters like battlefield however and games like tarkov that are fairly demanding you will see a very noticable uptick and better 1% and 0.1 lows which are very nice to have imo and for 150usd or 210 cad (rough conversion) yeah I personally think its worth it but I still urge you to make your decision yourself as well

Sorry to hear about the dead 5800X! The timing is actually pretty good: AMD's new Zen 5 chips (Ryzen 9000 series) just landed, and they offer a nice jump in performance over the previous generation. Reviews show the 9700X is around 7 % faster than the 7700X in games, while the 9600X is about 9 % faster than the 7600X and has better minimum frame rates. Given your RTX 3080 and budget, the 9700X paired with a B850 board and DDR5‑6000 CL30 memory would be a strong all‑round upgrade; if you're more price‑sensitive and mostly game, the 9600X is still a big step up over your dead 5800X. Whatever you choose, make sure to update the motherboard BIOS before installing the new chip and you'll be back up and running.

Perfect thank you for your advice. I might aim towards the Ryzen 7 9800X3D with a B850 motherboard(not sure which one yet). So i guess once my parts are all installed i just upgrade to the latest bios (stable not beta) before I even install Windows 11?

For sure it will be my decision and I will go take a look at some reviews from the Youtubers that you mentioned first. From what you said I think the 200$ more would be worth it. Would you suggest the same motherboard if I go with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D?

There was currently another thread on the same-ish topic (a mother board to go with a 9800x3d) and I'll just say what I did there

Any decent enough AM5 motherboard will do

Doesnt matter if it's a b650 b850 x670 x870 or whatever else
As long as it ain't a dangerous one and has enough I/O for you it is more than fine

And yes I wouldn't change my suggestions

Ram brands dont matter, like at all

They mostly use the same 2 or 3 chips from the same companies

The cheapest kit with the same speeds will do

My aio cooler doesn't come with a AM5 bracket, they can ship one free of charge but I have to pay for the shipping (20$), the problem is it take 2-4 weeks to get delivered.

Do you recommend any aio cooler, I think a 280mm is good enough with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The one I have now is a 280mm.

Artic liquid freezer III

One of the best AIOs and very affordable (for an aio)

Whether you get the 280mm or 360mm is up to you but I (provided they aren't crazy expensive due to low stock) the 360mm should be a much better deal

I was exactly looking at that aio cooler, all my fans AR from Artic. I like the smaller 280mm but I can't find a Artic Liquid Freezer III 280mm Pro a-rgb, the 360mm is available for 210$ CAD before taxes. Thinking of going with it and it should fit in the front of my Corsair 4000D Airflow. The only place a 360mm fit in that case is in the front. I would put it as intake, the rear 120mm exhaust and the top I was thinking exhaust also. Not sure if that would be the best airflow?

I'm now thinking if I don't do a gpu upgrade also or I wait for better deal. Aiming for 5070ti it's around 1200$ before tax, I know I would see a big difference compared to my 3080 which would definitely be my bottleneck with my Ryzen 7 9800x3d. Maybe better to be patient and wait for a deal around Cyber Monday or Black Friday.
