I want to know when should I upgrade my PC. My PC is ~5 years old.

I have:

Ryzen 5600x

16GB RAM

3060 ti

650W PSU

Either:

a) Your current system can't handle the games/tasks you'd like

OR

b) There's been a significant generational uplift

Idk what you're playing and what your expectations are but your system should still be decent enough for 1080. Might need some help from upscaling but that's just how it is. I do think that with the 5060/9060 having been released, you should upgrade to those asap if you can. Same class but just much better performance. Try to stay away from the 8gb variants tho.

There are some games where my PC struggles and I get low frame rates. Overall, I just want to future proof my setup for upcoming titles in the next few years, so I’m trying to figure out when the next generation of hardware is coming out.

Can't really "futureproof" for future games but the Ryzen 5 5600X is still good. Between that and the RTX 3060 Ti I'd recommend getting a new graphics card (if you can) because 8GB of video memory can be limiting in new games. My personal recommendation from the newer generation is the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT, 16GB will be plenty for years.

Typically, there's a new generation about every other year. So your cpu/gpu are like two generations old. But what matters is that there's a discernible difference in the performance between the generations at your price point. E.g. the 9600 is definitely a better cpu but is it worth the upgrade? (because that also means new ram + mobo) Probably not. And the 5060 is not only much better than the 3060 but is at a reasonable price (many, however, feel that the price should be much lower). The 9060 16gb is simply the best card in its class (both value and performance) and a meaningful improvement over the 3060. That makes sense.

If you're pc is struggling in some titles:

1) try to lower the settings. doesn't look as good and hurts a little but at least it's playable. If that doesn't work then,

2) Look at buying a 9060. Great card. Will definitely help. Especially for heavier, graphically demanding titles.

It would help a lot more if we knew your target/current framerates and the games you play
