For the past month my PC's internet and ethernet have both been considerably slower than usual. All other devices are working fine. I have swapped out the TP Link below my desk and the ethernet cable, and updated motherboard drivers, but nothing has worked. Any idea?

Wireless- ~30mbps download changed to 5

Ethernet: ~90mbps download changed to 1.75

Motherboard- b450m dS3H WiFi

No troubleshooting has worked.

I would recommend booting to a live image of ubuntu or something and seeing if the speed issue remains - if it does remain, this tells you that your network adapter, cable or router is having an issue. If the issue goes away in Linux, it tells you you likely have a software issue.

Given it happens on both wired and wireless however, it's probably an issue with your router.

Well, the first thing to do is testing your internet connection with another computer. If the other computer has the issues too, the your computer is not at fault. But if the other computer gets full-speed Internet, then your computer is the culprit.

If your computer has a problem, you should make sure that chipset drivers, ethernet and wifi drivers are up to date. If nothing changes, you can try booting from a Linux live USB stick and check if Internet is faster.

If the problem is not your computer, then you can try rebooting your modem and router. Try another Ethernet cable. Change your wifi access point name and password, etc. If nothing changes then contact your ISP to make sure the problem is not from their end.

Good luck !

I have done everything you said other than boot to Linux lol. Everything seems fine, my PC is the only one not getting a strong signal.

Wild shot in the dark (don't laugh, I've pranked a friend like this). Check your router setting and make sure someone didn't set a speed cap on your device.

Other than this, do you have a network card that you could test wifi/ethernet?

When you tested another computer did you use the same cable and port on your router?

Have you checked if there's a update for your router?

Have you turned if off and back on again? (joke)

It's a little late where I am currently so I'm not going to fully type the instructions but I'd recommend doing some iperf tests. These are really easy and good accurate way of measuring speed. Here's one guide - https://www.techtarget.com/searchnetworking/tip/How-to-use-iPerf-to-measure-throughput ymmv

If you have multiple devices try the following

WiFi -> WiFi

WiFi -> LAN

LAN -> LAN

WiFi -> WAN

LAN -> WAN

There are some public hosted iperf servers you can use on the WAN and then for your wireless and wired ones between devices on your network you just spin it up locally. This should help point out if there's is an issue with your network specifically or something upstream.

Well, it means the next step is to test with a Linux live stick 🙂

By doing so you'll bypass the Windows system and use different drivers to help determine if this is a hardware issue or a software issue.

the thing is, since my PC is upstairs I'm using a TP-Link that has been working fine for 14 months now.

Resolved!! Turns out my TP Link's 2.4g channel was broken. I disabled the 2.4g and my internet's back online. Only time will tell if it sticks though
