Hello all,

This is My current PC Build (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/v7HYPn) and has been for quite some time now and the reason I'm posting here is because I'm trying to decide if upgrading My current PC is worth it for what I want to do activity/task wise, etc.., if the parts I'm thinking about buying will be good enough. I'm thinking about upgrading the CPU/CPU-Cooler/RAM to this below:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/xv7tb2 1600 to 5700X3D | Stock Cooler > Thermal PA 120 SE | 32GB DDR4 2,133MHz (4x8GB (Quad)) to 32GB DDR4 3,200MHz (2x16GB (Dual)).

I will also be upgrading the GPU later in the year once I get the money for that. I'm thinking an RTX 4000 Series GPU due to My motherboard's PCIe Slots. Thoughts? Like a 4070? 4080 at a stretch maybe hopefully or too overkill?

For the RAM, I would had loved to have 64GB, a 2x32GB Kit for example, but according to PCPP, only the 4x16GB Kits are compatible with My motherboard, and afaik, 4x16GB would perform worse and would cause speed (MHz) issues... correct? Could someone clarify that?

Is the Thermal PA 120 SE a good CPU Cooler? If not, any better (AM4) recommendations please?; It has to be a good, nice quiet air cooler!

One very important thing to note is that, I play on 4k resolution (3840x2160) when gaming / on the desktop. I use 3 monitors which is more than enough.

I'm wanting to upgrade now because I've been playing a lot of (GTA V) FiveM in addition to some new-ish/classic titles recently and will continue doing so, however, races, pursuits, custom model/asset loading, etc.- when playing FiveM is getting a bit laggy and/or more noticeable. I'm also wanting to start up a FiveM Server which includes designing/customizing custom models/assets/vehicles/buildings/etc.- which means working with Blender, VS Code, etc.. which as we all know, loves consuming resources, CPU/RAM/etc..

The reason why I'm considering an upgrade as opposed to building a new PC is because, I mainly play FiveM, not so much the newer AAA games. I know that a new build would probably be better but I just don't have the budget for that currently. Anyway, with all that out of the way, lol, is that upgrade (CPU/Cooler/RAM) worth it?

Feedback/Advice is greatly appreciated.

Please & Thanks.

Is the RAM you have, DDR4 3000, running at 2133 (due to the CPU), or did you use the 3000 RAM as a placeholder in PCPartPicker?

If it is 3000, then you can go with the 5700X3D and don't need to change the RAM; with the 5000 series, the RAM will run 3000 without issues. It's not motherboard-related; the memory controller on Ryzen is a part of the CPU, it's not a component on the motherboard. A 5700X would also be a huge upgrade.

If your RAM is the base DDR4 running at just 2133, then I'd recommend getting a complete new platform, since you'd have to replace the CPU and RAM anyway. The X370 board is old.

The current RAM I have is set at 2,133MHz despite the fact it's a 3,000MHz kit, I did try setting it to 3,000 but My PC was being awkward af at the time and throwing errors so I just never changed it because it was hassle, lol, I've just let it sit at 2,133MHz since.

The reason I chose over the 5700X3D instead of the 5700X is because of FiveM, because I've read online it can be CPU-intensive sometimes (annoyingly) and because the X3D version has a much better cache.

Another reason for wanting to swap to a 2x16GB kit is because, Windows 10 shows it as 16GB.. and 32GB?

32GB listed in the top right, 15.9GB on the left and 16.1GB reserved

Idk how to fix this otherwise I would have done so.

I don't think 32GB DDR4 (in one stick) or any 16Gbit modules (e.g. single rank 16GB) was widespread when Ryzen released, so that might be why it says that.

According to Kingston's article on the subject, Ryzen supports 16Gbit DDR4 from the 1st gen, but you might need to update the BIOS, especially if it is earlier than mid-2019.

Ok I kinda get what You mean, thanks for that. As for the BIOS, I already have the latest version (F51g) on the motherboard.

Going back to the main topic (Upgrade), would a 5700X3D and 4x16GB (64GB total) work alright? Or would 4x16GB as originally mentioned, perform worse? Or is it good? Idk, that's why I'm here asking for advice lol

It's between 4x16GB which is hard to buy / is expensive,

2x16GB but at 3,200MHz

or do I keep My current 4x8GB and try to get it to 3,000MHz

I just don't know which will perform better

Well, early Ryzens weren't great running 4 sticks, so it is possible the CPU upgrade will unlock the higher speeds for you, in which case the sensible option is probably just do the CPU and then see what happens.

Buying 2x16 from 4x8 is not at all attractive and a 5700X3D will help you to reduce performance loss at slow memory speeds, likely due to the big cache.

I suspect 2x32 would run fine, though if you're going to be spending a lot on this PC, you're reaching the point that an overhaul (and moving to AM5) might be the more sensible option.

According to PCPP, there are no compatible 2x32GB (64GB total) kits that will work with My motherboard and the 5700X3D.

I very heavily agree that AM5 would be better but like I said originally, I mainly play FiveM, not so much the newer AAA games, mainly FiveM and some classics that I have in My Steam library, lol.

How come You chose a 7600 as opposed to the 5700X3D? I thought the Ryzen X3D CPUs were meant to be a pretty good choice?

Also, about the different motherboard upgrade that You wrote, I would upgrade to a better motherboard but A) I've never really done it before, B) I've had this PC for a long time and don't want things potentially getting screwed up and C) I don't know how to swap mobos incl.- the Windows key, etc.., hence why I'm thinking about upgrading the current motherboard/platform that I have.

I don't know how they decide this, but assuming it just reflects the launch specs then that's normal because these kits did not exist at the time.

Manufacturers often don't update the tech specs or QVL afterwards to reflect higher memory capacity, you'll only find it in the BIOS notes (if at all).

Many 32GB (2x16) kits also use 16Gbit memory (if they're single rank).

If so, then Thank You for that bit of info, I guess I can try and get it to 3,000 if I buy a 5700X3D.

Or do I just call it a day and buy > install a fresh 3,200MHz 2x16GB Kit?

Aka the one I listed on that PCPP:

Because I mean to be fair, that alone is pretty cheap and it'll be an extra (free) 200MHz and then I can just use the CORSAIR Kit elsewhere, but yeah idk, what do You think? 👀

The upgrade would be costly but give HUGE performance uplifts. You can run RAM faster in your new config (with 2 sticks instead of 4). Blender will run much faster too, due to the dedicated ray tracing cores on the RTX series GPUs and extra VRAM. For 4K, 12GB of VRAM might be a little low, but it is better than 8GB. You could get a used or renewed RTX 4080 maybe.

With an X3D, because of the large L3 cache, the RAM speed does not matter a lot as long as it's some modern~ish RAM (2933 and up).

Hi, got another quick question for You both, so I think I'm gonna go ahead and get the 5700X3D and a new CPU Cooler and a RAM Kit for now, however, I wanted to ask about the RAM.

So, I'm thinking about going with this: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/T6s7qH, PCPP says the RAM is compatible, but due to outdated Memory Support Lists on GIGABYTE's website, neither the 5700X3D or the RAM Kit I've chosen, are listed here: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-AX370-Gaming-K5-rev-1x/support#support-doc,

Will I be okay? Hopefully Windows 10 (currently) won't start throwing potential errors/BSODs/etc..?

(And yes I did choose a slightly higher RAM Kit, mainly because the one that's linked in the OP was out of stock and I kinda need it asap to continue My FiveM RP, etc.. lol)

But yeah anyway, please let Me know if I'll be alright or if it's gonna cause potential issues.
Please & Thanks

Hello! According to the link you sent me about your motherboard, your CPU is listed and supported (as long as the BIOS is updated), showed in the picture below. But it may not ship with BIOS version F51g, and then you'll need to manually update the BIOS using an older CPU (if you have one laying around), otherwise it may be trouble!

As for the Ram compatibility, as long as it's a DDR4 kit that's 3200MT/s or less (which yours is 3200MT/s) it should run fine.

I hope this helps! 😄

Hey! 🙂

Yeah I see the 5700X3D listed there, but on the link I provided, it only lists up to the "Raven Ridge" family which is the 2000 Series 'chips, on the `Support` > `Support List` tab(s), as shown below:

My apologies, I should have worded My previous comment a bit better, lol 😅

The Ryzen 5000's are Granite Ridge.

I was confused with that myself (the website), though any DDR4 RAM should work. Do you happen to have an older Ryzen laying around? That may be necessary to update the BIOS. 😄

I'm already on F51g (Latest version) luckily, updated to it a while backimage.png.7853a06ff87b5b6cef2236d9b11c49f0.png

So I should be good to go? If so, then I might get the parts ordered tonight or tomorrow haha 😄 I'm just praying for no errors/etc.. b'cos of the current Windows 10 installation lol

Yup! Should be good to go! Please let me know if any errors occur. By the way, Windows 11 is able to run on a 5000 series processor. 😊

Ok good, because I'm gonna try and upgrade from 10 to 11 via Windows 10 (current), because of Microsoft ending Support/Security-updates/etc.- for 10 😭

Sounds good! Yeah, I know how you feel. Windows 11 just hasn't nailed it... Windows 10 still has its advantages!

Ehh some 11 features I like, some I don't, some I wish stayed like Windows 10, but yeah like I said, I'll upgrade because of the support/security/etc.- haha

But yeah going back on topic, I'll try and get those parts ordered soon hopefully and then hopefully score a 4070 or similar later in the year.

Also, in a previous comment, You said about a 4080 but I checked on PCPP earlier and I couldn't install it if I wanted too, not with this current EVGA G2 650W PSU, because it hasn't got the right connector, sadly.

Hey!

Just wanted to give a quick update to say that the PC has just booted to the desktop and that System Information & Task Manager are successfully recognizing the 5700X3D which is such a massive relief! 😄 See images below.

Spoiler

image.thumb.png.c71e0d113d0365a5061756f999aab2ce.png

image.png.d438d7f5db961e9fcc658f3e5ef3c86c.png

Trying to get My old (stock) CPU Cooler off was a bit of a nightmare ngl because it got (very) stuck, I eventually got that off after applying a tiny bit of heat, I installed the 5700X3D CPU and started working on the CPU Cooler which took way longer than expected (About 1-2 hours) to fully set up > install onto the motherboard / CPU Socket, anyway I got that installed and then seated the RAM in slots 2 and 4 from left > right (A2 and B2), then I booted up and got a message about `fTPM/PSP NV`, I pressed Y and reset that, about 2 mins later, I arrived back at the desktop, thankfully!

I think I might need to go back and adjust the CPU Cooler ever so slightly in a few days or whenever because I'm not entirely sure about the fans, I think the positions of them are misaligned ever so slightly, partly because of the new Corsair RAM Kit 😬

But yeah as things stand, I'm gonna try running a couple benchmarks tomorrow to make sure the cooler is alright, I'm just praying that it's attached to the CPU correctly 🙏
