GPU dead after driver update

I reset windows to factory default on an old PC with a GTX 1050, and after installing chipset and nvidia drivers I did a restart and the pc no longer booted. 

 

The ez-led on the msi motherboard is showing a vga issue, I put the GPU into my main pc and I heard the windows startup sound but the display didn't show anything on hdmi or displayport. 

 

I tried removing the boot drive and swapping memory, reseating gpu and stuff and no luck. 

 

Is the gpu just dead?

edit: I put a known good gpu in the old system that wouldn't boot and it still doesn't work, it's making me think its a dead motherboard but how can it just die after it was just working?

Check maybe you will see on board melt or burn marks. Did it stink?

The current is not constant, maybe there was a higher voltage somewhere.

I can't see any burn marks or bad caps or anything. I'm thinking it may be possible it's a bad power supply (only 80+ white as well) since both gpus didnt work in the machine maybe not getting enough power?

Tried resetting the BIOS? Maybe write it again/update it?

The GPU might just have died. Happened to me with an old Matrox M9128. It was working fine in 1920 x 1080 but once I updated the drivers to the latest it could only manage to display the bios screen with heavy artifacting at best.

I think your GPU might have been on its last legs and once you updated the driver it allowed a part of the GPU to be used differently then before and killed it.
