Frustrating Crashes

Go to solution Solved by Tedoku,

I talked with my brother today about this issue and he suggested switching from using my ethernet to Wi-Fi and see if the issue goes away. After playing for about 5 hours in MH Wilds I had no crashes! I'm gonna give it another day of playing to see if it's still there but so far so good.

So I have been having an issue for a couple months now where my PC will crash and reboot. There is no BSOD it just freezes on the frame of the game I’m on then goes black and boots right back up on its own. I’ve checked event viewer for anything out of the norm and all is fine. No pre crash weirdness. I have just upgraded to a 9070xt from a 3080 and this issue still persists. DDU was used and drivers updated after the graphics card upgrade. ALL drivers are up to date… I went down the list from my mobo manufacturer and just started updating (even the sound drivers)

I have noticed the crashes only happen when I’m playing some multiplayer games. Deadlock was the first one I noticed it in. Most recently it’s monster hunter wilds.

My temps are around 65 degrees for both cpu and gpu.

Please send the best PC guru to help. I usually think of myself as pretty capable when it comes to pc troubleshooting but this is too much for me!

Specs:

cpu: Ryzen 7800X3D

cooler: Corsair h100i aio

Ram: 32gb g skill 6000

graphics card: PowerColor rx 9070xt

psu: Corsair rm850x

storage 2tb Samsung m.2 / 2tb Samsung ssd

It could be a RAM problem. Or even a power supply problem.

To address it being a PSU issue I ran furmark and cinebench concurrently for about 10 min to check my thermals and see if I get a shut down with both gpu and cpu are at full load. No crash happened and thermals looked okay. Only high temp was vram temp which hovered between 88-90c.

This issue is also not a timed event. I could be playing monster hunter wilds for 5 minutes and see it crash, 3 hours, or maybe it just doesn't even happen. I never get a crash when playing single player games. I have played an 8 hour session of KCD2 without any hitches

I'm going to update the firmware for my drives and do a windows fresh install and see if I notice it fixed tonight.

Update: Still did the crash but I encountered another issue I've never seen. I'm in a town in monster hunter wilds and after 3 hours I all of the sudden cant do anything and no menus will load. So I close the game and my hard drive via steam is not accessible and it wants me to "reinstall" my games on my secondary SSD. I reboot the PC and all is back to normal. I then go to relaunch the game and within 5 minutes of running in the open world my game does the same thing where I cant access my map and in game music is gone. I turn and see an npc run up that is now very low polygons. Then my computer did the same crashing issue where it reboots itself with no BSOD. My idea is it may be some sort of issue with the SSD? Maybe its running the game off my ram till it needs to load in more information then crashes the PC. I still don't understand why this would only happen in online/multiplayer games.

Yes, it points to an issue with the drive or the RAM.

it can be anything among these problems..  too high cooling block pressure on the cpu.. memory, mainboard, cpu issues.

i think you would get more bluescreen if it's a disk issue.  and should have more bluescreens for the others too..

normally i would say dead reboots are PSU issues, but it often are not.

i would have started by reducing pressure one half turn on each nut holding down your cooling block..

if that don't help.. set the memory speed to non XMP.. or test only 1 stick at a time and see if it still happens.

any non critical systems like spare ssd's or harddisks i would disconnect too.

I’ll have to check out hard drive sentinel, I’ve never heard of it. When I used the Samsung magician both of my drives said they were in “good” health.

I’m doing memtest86 on each stick of ram, first one took 2 hours last night and I’m running my second one right now. If they both come back with no issues (which I’m kinda hoping one does just so I know the problem) I will turn off XMP and see if reducing the pressure on the cpu will help. I just don’t understand why these issues only happen when I’m playing online games.

The main Samsung drive is a bit warm, but everything seems ok.

What's that 30GB "Disk 3", a USB flash drive?
