Hello,

About two weeks ago, I installed a Ryzen 7 5800x into my system, after moving from a Ryzen 7 3700x.

However, since this transition my system seems to experience occasional crashes where the system will unexpectedly restart or sometimes throw a BSOD. Upon checking Event Viewer it seems these errors are linked to hardware, specifically the CPU.  Fortunately, the crashes don't seem to occur when playing games, and have typically happened when the system is locked for a period of time or when idling on the web. These crashes aren't consistent, and will occur once every few days.

The following errors keep re-occurring:

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: Bus/Interconnect Error
Processor APIC ID: 0

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
Processor APIC ID: 0

After doing some research, it seems this problem is more common than I initially thought it would be. In this scenario, I'm unsure what the appropriate action should be, as I've seen a lot of conflicting solutions online so far i.e. undervolting the CPU, adjusting curve settings. I'm hoping to get some help, and clarity on what a suitable solution would be.

Here's the system specifications that the CPU is currently paired with:

Processor: Ryzen 7 5800x

Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H-CF

Graphics Card: NVIDIA RTX 2080 SUPER (MSI Edition)

RAM: Corsair Vengance 32GB RAM 3,200mhz (XMP is currently enabled via BIOS)

From my initial analysis, I'm thinking it's most likely the motherboard combination it's not liking however, I could be wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

BIOS is fully up to date, and have not done any OC/Undervolting on the machine.

However, the CPU wasn't brand new, so unsure it had been OC'd prior.

My first guess would actually be your motherboard is the culprit. Its a really cheap board with piss poor VRM. The old chip is 65w TDP where as the 5800x is 105w, but in reality pulls more than that.

Figured it might've been the motherboard, any recommendations for a suitable upgrade pathway for that?

Perhaps something along the lines of a B550M PRO or B550M-A WiFi?

neither of those boards are particularly good either. What is your budget and area?

Based in the United Kingdom, and probably would want to stay in the £150 - £200 mark.

No need to spend  that much, a decent Gigabyte B550 Elite is around 110

Are you limited to only mATX?

Yes, my case isn't the largest, and mATX is what I'm limited to.

Since I'm currently in the process of moving house, I'm not yet looking to do a full system swap out until I've settled in my house. I'd be more than happy to wait until after I've moved as by then, I'd be able to swap out my motherboard and case. As mentioned prior, the WHEA errors have only occurred while idle (leaving the system locked for 15 - 25 minutes while going for food etc).

It's not yet happened while actively gaming, although I'm not wanting to leave the problem linger to potentially get worse.

Take the CPU out and check for bent pins or broken pins.
