Hello,

I had my 2nd laptop on ubuntu 24.04 and reinstalled it to windows 10 then upgraded to pro right after. I just realized I was storing quite a bit of files that are alot of emotional value and i reset the laptop without backing up the files 😞 Is there ANY possible way to still recover those files?? I would very much appreciate it if it is free but i can also pay for it if needed. I would really really appreciate it if i have those files back they are of too emotional value and i dont want to lose them. i made a stupid mistake🥲. I was thinking on using the laptop for a steam cache (not lancache but directly from steam over local network) i reset the laptop installed steam and some games already and i just realized there were files on there that i moved off my phone to have and have more space available since the storage as good as completely full. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

they are gone. there is sometimes a possibility to recover files even after a os reinstall, but it is not really feasible once you start installing software and games.

if you still want to try, I would recommend you stop using the pc immediately and figure out what type of drive it is, and get a usb enclosure for it.
you can then plug it into your other pc and run free software like recuva against it. I'm not sure if it even works with ext4 though

No thats sad😞 I just turned the pc off about 5-15 mins ago but its been since morning that i reinstalled the laptop. The ssd is a samsung 870 evo 500gb sata ssd. The filesystem is ntfs (since its windows ofc). I will try recuva if its still at all possible... Any paid way i will also appreciate it doesnt matter i just need the files back. Even if it means sending the disk to a data recovery specialist or whatever. Thank you for ur suggestion

You can try to find a data recovery company that will work with you without shipping the drive. I'm not sure which ones do it but I have heard some have a service for accidental deletion where they will guide you on what to do to get set up on your side, then they remote in and try to use tools against it to try to find data. There was a video ages ago where LMG used one to try to recover video files that suffered bitrot or something.

For that drive, any 2.5in sata enclosure will work.
