I’m looking to build a new pc and want to build with the new ryzen 7 9800x3d as soon as I can get my hands on one. I also plan to use a new 5000 series graphics card but not sure which mobos are best or actually worth it. I want to use X870 even though there’s not much upgrade with them I don’t want to have to do much with bios and also keeping everything around the same age in terms of release. I was pretty set on the Asrock x870 nova but appears to always be out of stock which I’m fine with waiting but wondering if any other boards should be considered. I need WiFi which most have now and at least 3 m.2 spaces. Any advice on which boards to lookout for is appreciated thanks.

Most X870 boards are already good, even the cheapest ones, for 9800x3D and even something better, so it all comes down to the features.

ASRock X870 Pro RS WiFi

Gigabyte X870 EAGLE WIFI7

I assume you won't use any expansion cards right?

Have a look through this.

Maybe you find a board you lile.

I would still personally use a B650 motherboard and save some money.

If the board has built in wifi and Bluetooth I don’t plan on using any expansions no. Just wanting to find one that will allow me to overclock a bit in the future and not have to worry about it.

modern VRMs start to throttle around 90C, B650 boards are capable enough to stay below that with 7950x, or considerably below that:

8 phase VRMs are already decent enough to drive 7950x on constant load,

then you have 12 phase which is better, but in today's market still "already overkill" even for 7950x,

But phases aren't the only contributor, if you look at chart with higher temps, there's ASUS TUF B650-E, this Motherboard has 8 phase VRM design, but stays cooler than GAMING PLUS WIFI MSI which has 12 phase VRM design,

  • to make it very simple, your only concern is getting board that doesn't use cheap VRM components and cooling, which there's decent amount to choose from:

Asus TUF GAMING B650-E WIFI

MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

ASRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi

Asus ROG STRIX B650-A GAMING WIFI

Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI

Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX V2

MSI MAG X670E TOMAHAWK WIFI

ASRock X870 Pro RS WiFi

Gigabyte X870 EAGLE WIFI7

The higher ones are cheaper.

Another note that might be useful is that, some motherboards come with non-functioning wifi, and need the OS installed first so they can download wifi drivers in order to use wifi.

Similar situation with B650 (and X670) board supporting 9000 series processor, if it's not updated before shipped, you'll need an USB stick with latest BIOS version from motherboard's website, but you won't need old processor, the B650 motherboards have bios flash function that allows them to update it by just plugging the USB in designated USB header on MB, and pressing the BIOS flash button in a matter followed in the Motherboard's manual.
