Random Grey Screen Restarts

Go to solution Solved by Tridefender,

Well, then it has nothing to do with graphics card/PSU, nor was it ram since you did the tests already. I would suggest you to try RMA CPU/mobo.

Or first order a mobo from Amazon to check CPU, if no more crashes happen just keep it, if it keeps crashing refund the mobo and buy a new CPU.

Hi,

I’m having random PC restarts, except it’s not a BSOD, it shows a grey screen and then starts to reboot as if I pressed the restart button.

System Specs:

Ryzen 5 5600x

Strix b550-i (updated to latest bios)

32gb Corsair ram

MSI 7900 XTX

Corsair sf1000l

Windows 11

I previously had a 2080s and an 850w PSU, but upgraded both recently. The issue was happening even on those which is partly why I upgraded them as I thought it may have been a PSU issue.

I have plugged my pc into 3 different circuits in my flat, tried different surge protectors and cables to my PSU.

I have taken the pc apart and rebuilt it to see if reseating components helped.

My last idea is it may be CPU/Mobo related, but I am able to run Prime95 for 2 hours without issue, but as soon as I try to watch a YouTube video on chrome or play any game it crashes/restarts.

I really am out of options of understanding what this could be, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

But when you try to game it just dies? weird, maybe run some memory checks

No I can run Furmark on the GPU without issue as well, it doesn’t seem to be a load issue or power issue at all.

Oh and one thing, furmark is not vram intensive, do something to check your VRAM, i think theres a DOS program for this. I've seen repair dudes use it but I don't have a copy.

What is the most recent hardware/software change that follows these random restarts?

So first, it could be this specific AMD GPU issue, or it could be a driver issue.

How did you swap from Nvidia to AMD, what did you do install/uninstall during this transition?

Yeah even just using chrome causes it to die.

Since this has started I’ve swapped every component except for CPU & Mobo.

i did a full driver uninstall between GPU’s but I have also recently done a new windows install on a new C drive so there’s is no NVIDIA driver w/ AMD GPU issue happening.

I’m currently running the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, and after that will try to run OCCT for my GPU.

oh no, that's not really that GPU intensive, but perhaps that's a good thing

I'd say you could try blaming RAM, and try one stick of each and also different slots in MB, to see if it's dead RAM

Generally ram will make windows throw a BSOD, like generally IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, since everything was fine before his upgrade I would say it's something with the new hardware.

in control panel there's a reliability monitor that records every crash, check on that and see if windows manages to capture anything. And besure that you used DDU to uninstall previous driver but in the case of AMD/NVIDIA swaps i would say it's safe tho. A unused driver can't break your system this badly.

Incase of ram, try doing a TM5 test, not the stock one cuz it kinda sucks, try anta 777 extreme/1usmus.

WMD tool completed with no issues, and OCCT VRAM and 3D combo test is running without issues as well.

For the control panel reliability monitor, I’ve attached a photo of the issues it shows. I’ll try those RAM tests now, thank for the help so far!image.thumb.jpg.e54ccfc05be5033f66bebfc211ab9650.jpg

I ran the extreme TM5 test and no issues with the ram. I also tried moving the ram around, and using each slot on its own but again the grey screen reset happened.

I’m honestly out of ideas of what it could be at this point.

Let's do a quick recap, when you did the upgrade you removed the psu and the gpu, replaced them with the new one, installed AMD drivers and your PC starts crashing. Am I correct?

Did you remove and reinstall your motherboard when replacing the PSU?

No the crashing was happening with the previous PSU and GPU. After I changed them and it still was happening, I then changed the RAM. It continued to happen and I changed both NVME drives with a fresh windows install, and it still happens.

Yes I removed the motherboard when changing everything as it’s a sff case. I have also completely rebuilt the pc yesterday, taking the CPU out of the socket and reseating it, and adding new thermal paste.

Cool, thanks for all your help on this, I really appreciate it!
