I've recently noticed my entire computer will lag when doing specific desktop tasks. This affects mouse movement and video playback, however audio playback functions normally without any lag.

My specs are:

  • Fresh Install of Windows 11 Pro 64 bit - 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4249)
  • MSI B550 PRO-VDH WIFI (BIOS version 2.M1, 9/3/2024 latest)
  • Ryzen 5 3600X (stock speeds)
  • 2x16GB G.SKILL Ripjaws V 32GB DDR4 3200
  • GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3060 Ti GAMING OC 8GB (stock)
  • Samsung SSD 970 EVO 1TB Boot Drive
  • Corsair RM 650x (650W 80+ Gold)

I've attached a video demonstrating the lag. This same lag also appears when I open Display Settings for the first time, but when I tried recording it with OBS the issue didn't present itself. Weird..

I've started to get BSOD that I'm struggling to reproduce consistently. I ran Memtest86 and it reported errors on Test 6.

I've attached the dmp file along with a photo of what Memtest86 reported.

I tried looking up other people's experience with these errors and I see conflicting answers. Some people say it's the CPU, others say MOBO and some say that it's just the RAM. What next steps should I take to further diagnose the issue?

Troubleshoot with spare parts, or borrow a friend's pc to troubleshoot with.

Starting with the RAM, try your friend's parts in your pc and your parts in his.

Hovewer AMD cpus with some RAM combos might not work very well.

Have you updated the bios?

Disabled XMP?

A memory error can certainly induce lag when that particular stick is accessed.

Make sure your RAM sticks are properly seated. Then test again.

Ideally, you should test each stick in another computer. If all stick test good, then it may be an issue with the memory controller of the CPU. << (then test the CPU).

Good luck !
