My system does this weird shut down where the monitors turn off as well the keyboard and mouse doesn't wake it. When it does this the fans and RGB in the case continue to run. The power button has absolutely no effect. I have to power down the PSU to reset it.

Among the weirdness is that this will happen whenever I am not gaming, for example just browsing the Internet or using office 365. No issues while gaming.

A bit of history on this system.

I built it about 7 years ago.

Gigabyte aorus ax370 gaming k7

Ryzen 1700x

G. Skill flare ddr4 ram 128g

Gtx 1070ti plus gtx 1050ti

Windows 7 then updated to 10

Plus a number of drives.

This summer I wanted to upgrade to windows 11 so I needed to update the CPU and the BIOS. I started by trying to update the BIOS but ended up bricking it. I took it to local shop and they were able to fix the BIOS to the then most recent version so that I could upgrade the CPU. Changed the CPU to a ryzen 5900x and while I was at it, I changed the ram to g. Skill razer for more speed. I then changed out the video cards to a rtx 3060.

The system ran stable for a few weeks and then it started doing the weird partial shut down.

I have since tried returning the original ram and video card, same problem. I've updated all drivers and to the newest BIOS. I can't swap out the CPU with the old one because the mobo won't recognize it. (Something about it's TPM.)

The local folks have never heard of such a problem. My thoughts are the Mobo is finally on its way out or there is an issue with the CPU.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Doubt it but the CPU can be tested in another computer if you want to make sure.

Those older motherboards had to drop support for older CPUs when upgraded because of limited BIOS memory.

This is a weird setup. Why do you need the 1050ti ? Unless you ran out of outputs on the 1070ti, you can just remove the 1050ti.

I suppose the power button works normally when powering up so it should not be defective. Do you have another PSU you can swap for testing ? Yes, the motherboard can cause this but an aging PSU may also develop issues similar to the one you are experiencing.

Did you upgrade to Windows 11 yet ? I recommend wiping the boot drive and installing a fresh Windows 11. When upgrading important hardware, there may be "leftovers" from the older drivers and cause some weird issues. The PSU not shutting down may be one of them.

Hope that helps 🙂
