First build - DRAM Issue troubleshooting

bassdewd

Hi,

I'm a newbie PC builder. I'm currently building a machine with the following components (so far):

MB: X670E AORUS PRO X rev 1 https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X670E-AORUS-PRO-X#kf

CPU: AMD 9950x (integrated radeon graphics)

RAM: G SKILL Ripjaws S5 F5-6000J3040G32GX2-RS5K

SSD: Crucial T705 PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD

I can't seem to get the system to start properly. I don't see anything on my display (connected to motherboard HDMI). The system is getting power. The CPU fan is spinning. My keyboard light is working when connected.

When booting, there's a red flash on the CPU for like less than a fraction of a second, and then the DRAM light turns red and stays red (CPU light off).

From the motherboard manual:

Quote

Status LEDs The status LEDs show whether the CPU, memory, graphics card, and operating system are working properly after system power-on. If the CPU/DRAM/VGA LED is on, that means the corresponding device is not working normally;

What I have tried to get everything working

- Q-Flash the BIOS to the newest version (F32b)

- Reset CMOS

- Use only one RAM stick in all RAM slots, with both RAM sticks

- Reseat the SSD

Is there anything else I can try to debug the issue? Perhaps the RAM is not compatible with 9950x? When I look up the compatibility chart from the motherboard - it says that my RAM Is compatible with Ryzen 7000-series CPU. They don't have an option to select 9000 series (probably since it's so new). I assumed since it's also AM5, it would also work with the 9950x.

The machine does power up, but my screen remains black (no POST).

  1. Make sure your BIOS version is compatible with the CPU generation you're trying to run in your motherboard, you can consult the manual or the manufacturer's website about this.
  2. Check if EVERY power cable is connected. Auxiliary power connectors included.
  3. Make sure the cable coming from your monitor is attached securely to the graphics card. Also make sure it is securely attached to the monitor itself.
  4. Make sure your PSU is powerful enough to power your complete system.
  5. Try booting the system with only a monitor but no other peripherals connected.
  6. Make sure your monitor works by testing it on a different computer.
  7. If you have both a dedicated GPU and an iGPU, try your monitor on both the outputs on the graphics cards as well as on the motherboard.
  8. When trying the iGPU, if the board has VGA out, try that too instead of just digital out.
  9. Make sure all connectors and cables are plugged in securely, reseat if necessary.
  10. Make sure your RAM, CPU and GPU are plugged in securely, reseat if necessary.
  11. Remove riser cables between GPU and motherboard. If this solves the issue, try lowering your PCIe version/speed in the bios to PCIe 3 or lower
  12. If the motherboard you're using has debug LEDs, check the error code and consult the motherboard manual to see what it means. Where can I find an error code?
  13. If you have a debug speaker connected to the motherboard, note the beep sequence and consult the motherboard manual or this thread to see what it means.
  14. Try clearing your CMOS.
  15. Try booting your computer with only a motherboard, CPU and one stick of RAM attached (if you don't have an iGPU, plug in your GPU as well ).
  16. Make sure you try doing the previous step twice, due to possible DDR5 RAM training.
  17. Make sure your GPU works (if you have a dedicated one), try it in another computer.
  18. Make sure your RAM works, try it another computer.
  19. Make sure the RAM is compatible with your CPU and your motherboard.

Sorry, this is using the iGPU? Is there a dGPU connected as well?

Yes. For now, I'm trying to boot only using the iGPU. I intend to buy a dedicated GPU later.
