random bsod/ shutdown when gaming

Go to solution Solved by Sawa Takahashi,

If you made sure that you had no viruses and malware on your computer, it may be a hardware issue.

First thing, you can use MSI afterburner to power limit your GPU. Push the slider all the way to the left. You should see some reduction in fps, but does your computer still go BSOD ?

Hard to tell why it happens exactly but I'd try with another PSU just to make sure. It sounds really like a PSU running out of power and shutting down.

850W should be enough to power your system but it is possible that your PSU is malfunctioning.

Good luck.

pc specs:

Ryzen 5 5600g

32g ram running 3200 MHz

MSI mag x570 tomahawk max wifi

MSI RTX 3080 gaming trio

corsair RM850x psu

bios version 1.30

windows 10 home 64 bit version 22H2

at this point I have no idea what to do, the pc will sometimes bluescreen while gaming (Destiny 2, smite 2, total war warhammer 2, ark asa, warframe, elden ring)  but it fails to completely load the BSOD before rebooting even though I disabled auto reboot on BSOD, other times the pc will just blackscreen and reboot, the games run fine btw no fps or heat issues

I do not know what to do, windows does not create dump files when BSOD happens or crashing, I have tried multiple fixes to try and get dump files but still nothing, the only thing i managed to get was event viewer codes most are code 41 kernel level buts a few times it was also volmgr 161 although that error code barely happens

Tried using the latest bios?

Tried using the RAM with a lower clock?

Tried if it happens on Windows 11?

Hard to tell why it happens exactly but I'd try with another PSU just to make sure. It sounds really like a PSU running out of power and shutting down.

850W should be enough to power your system but it is possible that your PSU is malfunctioning.

Good luck.

i will try this if it does stop crashing then would it mean the psu is at fault?

In the Details tab it will show the bugcheck code. Usually in decimal so you would have to convert it to hex.

This error is seen when it fails to create a dump file from the BSOD.

When it can't create a dump file, storage is the main suspect, but there are some settings that could prevent dump file creation. You need more free space on your drive than have RAM because it dumps everything in RAM (And if you have manually set a page file size, it needs to be bigger than your amount of RAM). It also can't access encrypted drives on the BSOD screen. Some BSOD codes can point strongly towards storage so get the bugcheck code, but you can also try moving the page file. On the BSOD screen, it dumps data to the page file and creates a dump files from this on the next boot.

Rule of troubleshooting : if you replace a component and it solves your issue, that component was the issue....

So, that is a Yes 🙂

And if the issue persists, you know that your PSU was most probably not at fault.
