I bought a raspberry pi zero v1.3 to create a PiHole (following the LTT guide), but I can't find it on my network. I'm using the ethernet hub and usb hub from Adafruit suggested in the original topic.

The Pi Zero is showing a solid green light, and so is the USB/Ethernet adaptor.

I've tried both Raspbian Buster Lite 2020-02-13 and Raspberry Pi OS Lite (32-bit), and I have made sure I had ssh enabled for both.

But the PiZero isn't showing on my "attached devices" list in my network admin page. I've attempted to ping "raspberrypi.local" in PowerShell and Command Prompt, but the result is "could not find". I tried connecting to the same name on Putty, got told "Host does not exist".

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

For reference:

PC Operating System: Windows 10

Router: Netgear C7000v2

Thank you!

Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm using a self-crimped cat 6a, but I tested it on a Southwire 550 and got a pass.

Have u found the ip on your router?:)

Set a static ip for it, so u can ping it from there 🙂

I have not.
It's not showing up on my router at all, even when physically plugged in.

I have a cable tester and it showed a pass for the cable.

I don't think so, no. I was using balenaEtcher for the outdated Buster Lite, and when I moved to modern Rasp-Pi OSes, I started using their imager. In that imager, they have an option to enable SSH and put in a hostname. Even with both those inputted and set by the imager, my router couldn't find the rasp-pi.

Welcome to the forums!

Can you double check that these are not dead?

I think it is?

When everything is plugged in, the ethernet/usb hub (to be clear, it's a combo unit) has a green light showing near the ethernet port.

It does also have a red light showing near the usb ports.

I couldn't find a manual or something for the hub I'm using, sadly.

Mybe u can try without the hub?:-)

Are the ports on your router locked?

I can't try without the hub as the rasp-pi I bought doesn't have a built in Ethernet port.

I don't think the ports are locked, I've got access control set to not deny anything wired. I'd have to check.

You should be able to test the hub and ethernet dongle on your desktop

Unfortunately I can't. I don't have a way to connect the adaptor to my desktop.

The adaptor plugs in via micro-usb, which my desktop doesn't have a port for, and I don't have any other adaptors to make it connect.

I suppose I could try ordering a rasp-pi with a built in Ethernet port.

Dang
You could try getting the pi jack hat

That one is discontinued, but I'll shop around.

A coworker (who is a certified network tech) mentioned there might be a driver issue of the PiZero not recognizing the ethernet hub, which is possible. I don't know how to fix that.

So I'm gonna poke around at a Pi that has a built-in ethernet port and go from there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So, update!

I managed to:
-Reflash a new Rasp-Pi OS

-Boot into the Rasp-Pi (I used a cheap mini hdmi to hdmi cable, and a cheap set of keyboard/mouse, and a spare screen I've got in the apartment)

However!
Rasp-Pi could not detect the ethernet.

may have made the mistake of also enabling wireless in the Rasp-Pi imager, and I might have to try again with that option turned off.

I tried to reboot the rasp-pi to see if that might do anything.

So it shut off.

But then it wouldn't turn back on.

So I'll try reflashing the OS, with the option for wireless turned off since I'm going strictly wired.

Then we'll have to see.
